The Korean Black Eyes

In 1966, the girl band ‘All Stars’ was formed centered on drummer Kitty (Jun-im Lim), a third-year high school student. They left the country with an understanding that they were going to perform in Southeast Asia. However, they arrived and put on a spot to perform, sometimes risking their lives, for the soldiers on the battlefield of Vietnam. Kitty was recognized for her musical talent, and formed the five-member girl band ‘Korean Black Eyes’ in Bangkok in 1971. The band moved onto Beirut as their base and toured throughout the Middle East and Africa, including Egypt and Nigeria. When they entered Spain in 1973, they went on a concert tour with Cliff Richard, Julio Iglesias, and others. They recorded an album in Portugal at the suggestion of a local producer, but had to quickly escape the country when the military revolution broke out. Wherever they went, including Vietnam and Lebanon, they encountered turbulent scenes of modern history.

The Far and Near

In 1995, an astronomer proposed a peculiar project. It was to use the Hubble Telescope to capture a small part of the universe that was then known to be a void. In 1447 in Chosun Dynasty, Prince Anpyeong had a dream of walking through a peach blossom forest shrouded in clouds and mist, and he asked the painter, Ahn Gyeon, to capture it in a painting. Through the juxtaposition of the two historical anecdotes, the film examines the images of ‘the far and near’ through printing, transforming, and distorting the photos from the NASA Image and Video Library.

But how did it first make its way from Western civilization to areas where it was traditionally unavailable, and what were the consequences? In her short film poem, the author becomes an archaeologist of sorts through evocative images of the piano amidst natural scenery and questions about the Korean adoption of the chamber note A, which is a tuning standard in music, as she uncovers historical, social, and cultural layers in relation to sound.

His songs are about freedom even in the most oppressive circumstances. He prepares to release his last album in 2020. A master’s recording session is full of improvisation and energy. As a man of over 70 years old, his voice has gotten deeper and stronger with age. His is a husband and a father and a human dwelling upon the possibility of death approaching. As a youngster he exerted sharp criticism towards society, but on his last album it leans more towards reflection and regret rather than anger. Zero Waste

As the world continues to come face to face with the consequences of decades of environmental degradation, Danny Kim’s documentary Zero Waste explores the ways that five individuals in South Korea have taken it upon themselves to create solutions to the country’s plastic waste problems, which has been exasperated by the global pandemic, and whether their efforts can be enough to make up for decades of neglect. Both sobering and uplifting, Zero Waste paints a portrait of both the magnitude of the problem, and the perseverance of those people willing to address them.

A Movie

"motoko" collects private footage of anonymous deaths from harrowing events and disassembles them into chronophotography, then creates realtime-based algorithms. Based on this, "HASC" appropriates the wisdom of Dziga Vertov and Bruce Conner, who sought to (re-)define "cinema," and models the functioning of realtime sounds and images by (re-) convert/anchor it into a fixed format of non-realtime. The work A MOVIE explores the apparatus of sounds, images, and illusions, attempting to revive the conditions necessary to be designated as a cinema in today's timeline.

Trial

The sudden fear that arises when imagining the infinite nature of the universe comes from realising the finiteness and weakness of human existence. Trial is intricately designed for us to think about what we can have and what attitudes we can bolster as soon as the morality that we have built and the laws that history has established become totally powerless. Light and sound, which are constantly generated and dissipated over time, create a different dimension in space, opening up new environments.
