Speed of Happiness

Many trekkers visit Oze, a wetland with breathtaking scenery. However, having a long and severe winter, the mountain lodges in Oze are only open from May to October. Vehicles are unable to pass through the wetlands; “botcah” (the traditional carriers manually transporting luggage), who carry packages of food and other materials on foot, are the only ones who can get to the lodges. Speed of Happiness sends respect to the botcah who have embodied values learned while walking every day and humbly accompany their daily lives. Walking along at the pace of each botcah, the film gazes at calluses, smiles, hardships, endurance, and hope. The solidity of their lives in Oze pounds our hearts and the taste of each season touches our skin.

Limbo

The short film immerses viewers to the inside of a tunnel slide in a waterpark while the narration tells a story of a divided self, separated into a version from the past and the present. This schizophrenic condition of an imaginary and non-specific authorial self is caused by self-shaming and guilt of the regrettable past, which can be experienced in the current time where making a mistake is often unforgivable. The image of the endless tunnel from the vision of a person inside of a slide is juxtaposed playfully with the voice. From a perspective of a slider, the film invites viewers to experience strange yet familiar hyperreality and to blur the concrete state of existence by taking a journey of going through the liquid condition of waterslide.

Boundary: Flaming Feminist Action

After the Gangnam Station Toilet Murder Case in 2016, my friends and I started a new campaign by moving from the labor movement to the women's movement. We make Flaming Feminist Action projects that promote feminist movements with women's bodies and sexuality, such as "Liberation of armpit hairs" and "Liberation of nipples". Four years after our feminist manifesto, we open the diary of those four years that were hot, bitter, and damp like a sweltering summer.

UFO Sketch

This film introduces Professor MAENG Sunglyul at Woosuk University, the author of UFO Syndrome and a scientist researching into unidentified flying objects. That he is criticized for seeking enjoyment in challenging times reveals the ambivalent gaze of the public towards his study of UFOs. As an explorer of the unknown, he doubts the existence of UFOs, while at the same time considering uncharted or undiscovered territories beyond those defined by mainstream science. In the same vein, the film makes no attempt to draw quick conclusions about UFOs. Rather, it calmly conveys moments of communion between scientific approaches and people’s curiosity of the unknown. Now, it’s time to draw a sketch of UFOs.
