Critical Passion

Critical Passion studies the relationship between critics and authors in the history of Italian cinema in relation to the history of the National Union of Italian Film Critics (SNCCI), since its founding act in 1971. It is a non-secondary path in Italian cultural history, traced thanks to the interventions of prestigious witnesses and the editing of archive material, from the 1960s to the advent of the web and social networks and the current explosion of the audiovisual sector, which questions the very definition and boundaries of cinema.

Raw Dogs

Cesenatico, a town located on the Romagna Riviera, has always been synonymous with seaside tourism. Every 100 meters, an endless series of massive buildings alternate—structures that, over the years, have welcomed generations of teenagers during the summer: the colonies, many of which have since been abandoned and left to decay. In 2014, Simone Tribuiani—known as Tribu—with the help and support of other local creatives, decided to revitalize one of them: the former Santarcangiolese colony, later renamed Bronx Ponente. Inside, he created a space dedicated to local artists, surfers, and skaters—a place for meeting and self-expression. In 2020, members of H.C.B.P. (Hard Core Bronx Ponente)—a collective of skaters that emerged from the events of La Santa—breathed new life into another structure, located just a few meters from the Bronx.

Strade perdute - Filmmaker 23

For Filmmaker Film Festival (2023), Fulvio Baglivi and Cristina Piccino asked some filmmakers (R. Beckermann, J. Bressane, D’Anolfi/Parenti, T. De Bernardi, L. Di Costanzo, A. Fasulo, F. Ferraro, M. Frammartino, S. George, ghezzi/Gagliardo, C. Hintermann, G. Maderna, A. Momo, A. Rossetto, M. Santini, C. Simon, S. Savona) to give us their own "lost road," that is, a sequence, scene or piece of editing that did not later find its way into the final version of one of their works. Each fragment has its own accomplished presence, often has a different title from the film it was made for, which is not necessary to have seen in order to find meaning; on the contrary, those who set out thinking they know the world they are walking through will find themselves displaced.

Toska

Flavio, immersed in the sadness of nostalgia and regret, faces his daily loneliness, seeking solace in the solitary ritual of smoking a cigarette. Each puff becomes a journey back in time, an immersion in a parallel dimension that brings to light the moments shared with Alberto. The warmth of those hugs, the echo of shared laughter and the tears that bathed their cheeks become present, as if they had just happened. Every blurry image that surfaces, every fleeting glance that materializes and every whispered word that resonates reveal the fragile nature of human balance and the profound gravity of the choices that shaped their relationship. But in that very smoke lies a strange consolation, a sense of acceptance that begins to germinate in his heart. He accepts the end of the relationship, with all its painful consequences, and launches himself into a new future, leaving behind what has been and opening his arms to the unknown that awaits him.

Oceans Are the Real Continents

Alex and Edith, a young couple in their 30s, live their relationship made up of small gestures and everyday life among the ruins of Cuban buildings. Milagros, an elderly woman now retired, tries to survive by selling peanuts and spends her days listening to the radio and reading old letters. Frank and Alain, two nine-year-old friends, go to school and dream of emigrating together to the United States to become Major League Baseball players. Against the backdrop of San Antonio De Los Baños, a town in inland Cuba where time seems to stand still, these three narratives and their respective worlds unfold. Over this mosaic of contemporaneity, however, brought to life through the characters' memories, hovers the specter of separation, the true great scourge of Cuban society.

Mångata

Mångata is a reflection of the Moon’s light on a water surface which indicates the way to the Moon. This light also helps to rescue little Alya. She is the only one saved from a refugee boat that sunk in the Mediterranean. Many years later, as an astronaut on a pioneering mission, she will need this light again. Maja Costa takes the refugee subject, usually shown as a drama or bitter tragedy, into new territories. Under the attractive guise of science fiction she may concentrate not on what is going on nowadays but look into the future with hope and optimism challenging prejudice and stereotypes.
