A cinematographer is a person who is most often not particularly visible, but what he is doing is always visible. The Director of Photography is a rare opportunity to talk to filmmakers about filmmakers. This is not a conversation about their life, but about the profession that is the meaning of their life, an attempt, through their personal statements, to form an understanding of what is the modern concept of camera art, what is the literacy of the craft and what is the real content of camera work in practical concepts and categories. This is a mention of several main names in the profession of cinematographer, who today are associated with the most important events in national and world cinema.

Can't Feel Nothing

A man lies in bed illuminated by the blue-white light of his mobile phone. He doom scrolls past cute pets, outraged opinion pieces and haunting images from the world's hotspots – and he feels absolutely nothing. With curiousity and humour, director David Borenstein travels the world to investigate how bad things really are. Who is pulling the strings when the internet makes us angry, sad, horny or just plain indifferent? And is there any way back? From the American internet troll, a burnt-out superstar in the Asian influencer industry, a cynical fake-news factory in Eastern Europe, Russian state propagandists and an online dominatrix, this is an alarming contemporary diagnosis, with a bold attempt to also look at solutions.

The Altitude Gene II: The Mountain of All Mountains

This film explores why K2, rather than Everest, is the ultimate dream of climbers, and how extreme altitude changes people. The mountain of mountains is the best place on Earth to test your altitude gene. For the first time in history, the largest Russian expedition ever assembled is heading to K2, and most of its members are amateurs. Each of them already has experience climbing eight-thousand-meter peaks, and many have successfully summited Everest. But compared to this mountain, Everest will seem like a walk in the park.

Gorbacheva

Raisa Gorbachev, Nancy Reagan, Jacqueline Kennedy, Margaret Thatcher. Their names have been in the same row for a long time. This film is a bold attempt to rethink the role of Raisa Gorbacheva in the history of modern Russia. How did a girl from a simple village grow into one of the main humanists of the 20th century, revolutionizing many areas of the country's life? The Edge of the Night

In 2020, director Andrei Natotsinsky arrived in Sukhum, and the city greeted him with darkness: no lanterns were lit on the central square or around it. After learning that rolling blackouts are associated with cryptominers, who were attracted to Abkhazia by cheap electricity, Natotsinsky returned with a film crew. To figure out how the contrast between the active mining of cryptocurrency and the general devastation framed by wild landscapes works, he conducted four filming expeditions in three years. However, "Edge of the Night" is not a film about miners, or rather, not so much about them, as in general about a region that has not yet recovered from the war of 92-93, the subsequent conflicts and economic disaster. Immersing himself in local history, talking to a variety of people, watching the arrival and departure of miners, Natotsinsky tries to create an objective — as far as possible — picture of life in Abkhazia.

No Attachment Territory

For many years Russia has set an example for such western countries as Canada and the USA in developing and running wildlife preserves. Today our scientists are working on contactless ways of studying and saving wild animals; visual contact with humans often causes animals to develop attachment issues. No Attachment Territory is an extensive research documentary asking relevant and complex questions: to save or not to save, to interfere or not. Should one be a victim, a savior, a pursuer, or just an observer?

Still With Us

During the Soviet era, there were over 30,000 Lenin monuments in the USSR. They were recommended to be erected in certain places where Ilyich could “see” how his precepts were being fulfilled. In turn, Lenin’s presence had a beneficial effect on the surrounding area. Temporary portals of sorts appeared near the monuments, leading to the communist future: flowerbeds were laid out, flags were placed, blue spruces were planted. What does Lenin see today? And what do these “islands of the future” look like now? How do the descendants of the builders of communism feel about Lenin? A film of 10 short stories, filmed in different parts of Russia.

Wife to Be

The film focuses on women from a family living in southern Russia: two sisters, their mother, and grandmother. Every summer, the younger women visit the elders, returning to their roots and embracing a traditional way of life. This household is deeply matriarchal—men are present but play secondary roles. The film’s space is filled with rituals: fortune-telling, herb gathering, and bathing. Here, the sacred is intertwined with the mundane. The daughters follow the life paths of their mother, who once traced the steps of the older women in the family.
