Jope – Just Think for Yourself

An overweight boy who was a bullied at school grew up to become a beloved comedian, folk artist Jope Ruonansuu. He was a versatile entertainer, but above all an impressionist, able to imitate more than 150 characters from the ruling class. Jope's journey was a natural extension of the post-war "Rillumarei" -culture. He broke through when the monoculturalism was at its most vibrant and grew in popularity as it began to crumble. With weight loss surgery, Jope sought a healthier life, but also to shed the extra pounds and childhood traumas. After the surgery, he was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer, but continued to fight, developing a number of different projects, including an anti-bullying campaign together with the President of Finland, Sauli Niinistö. The project was to culminate in a joint visit to Syväkangas school, in Jope's home town of Kemi. Jope passed away before then, but Niinistö kept his promise.

Hard Knocks

Hard Knocks dives deep into this bizarre fusion of sport and theatre in order to uncover the true art of professional wrestling; blending combat and athleticism with drama and showmanship to captivate the minds of the audience, suspending any disbelief that what they are seeing is not real. Although you can hardly epitomize it as simply "real" or "fake", there is no denying the tremendous skill and aptitude required of each performer. Yet despite this and the often harsh realities of each match, to most people, professional wrestling is a laughing stock. Director Arthur Cauty interviews wrestlers, referees and promoters alike, with world famous stars of the WWE aligning with the stars of tomorrow to voice their opinions, revealing startling truths about this illusive business. This film will shock and astound, leaving you with a new found respect for professional wrestling and the men and women who dedicate their lives and bodies to this obscure art form.

American Vesuvius

On August 25th, 79 AD, the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum were flash-frozen in time when Mount Vesuvius erupted, destroying all life in its path. Noted paleontologist, archaeologist, and forensic physicist Charles Pellegrino is the author of Ghosts of Vesuvius, a fascinating look at this ancient volcanic eruption. In AMERICAN VESUVIUS, Pellegrino uses the emerging science of forensic archaeology to decipher clues and gather evidence that helps him reconstruct the final moments of the victims. Using the same forensic techniques, Pellegrino undertakes an investigation of the ruins of the World Trade Center. By processing evidence and interviewing witnesses, he illustrates dramatic physical parallels between Vesuvius's eruption and the collapse of the Twin Towers. His scientific exploration results in an array of startling connections between the destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum and the man-made devastation at Ground Zero.

Chasing the Muse

Jean-François Davy is a legendary French director of erotic cinema, whose work was among the most notable European adult film productions of the 1970s and 80s, particularly his documentaries on Parisian sexuality including Prostitution (1975), Les Pornocrates (1976), and the trilogy of Exhibition (1975), Exhibition 2 (1978), and Exhibition 79 (1979). After an absence of several years, Davy now returns to the erotic documentary genre that made him famous, only now he turns his probing camera on himself as well. Davy and his cameraman travel to the major cities of Eastern Europe – from Prague to Budapest, with stops in between – as the filmmaker searches for a beautiful muse to serve as the leading lady of his next carnal opus. As countless gorgeous young women undress to audition for the camera, Davy keeps looking for a girl with a special quality, and when he finds her, he also finds himself falling head over heels for her charms.

Streetcar

Jasper Wood's short film "Streetcar" is a poetic documentary of life in a big American city centered on the experience of riding its streetcars. The film is 15 minutes long and was shot in Cleveland, Ohio, largely in and around West 25th Street, Public Square, and the Central Market area (East 4th Street and Bolivar Road) during the summer of 1953, just before the ending of streetcar service in the city of Cleveland. Jasper Wood was assisted in the production of the film by Harry Schulke, Nick Hlobeczy, Tony Denison, Vlad Maleckar and Ed Feil. Jasper's son Denis (then nine years old) made the final title in the film, which depicts a man running after a streetcar. The film was shown at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 1955 or 1956.

Old Man's Journeys

Legendary film actor Juozas Budraitis turns 85. Over his career, he has appeared in more than 120 films not only in Eastern and Central Europe but also in Switzerland and Italy. Film sets brought him close friendships and moments of joyful creativity. Yet today, many of his colleagues are gone, and the actor is increasingly visited by the regret of unfinished work. The Old Man’s Journey is shaped not by the structure of a traditional biographical film but by the fragmentary nature of memory. The roles he has embodied remain etched in his recollection no less vividly than the key events of his life, and so the film guides the viewer between Budraitis’s youthful memories and his most significant cinematic experiences, weaving them into a single, nostalgic stream of remembrance.

Revolutionary America

The story of the American Founding, the greatest political achievement in history. The American colonists had developed a unique way of life as they practiced self-government for 150 years. In the struggles between the colonies and the mother country that followed the French and Indian War, Britain declared that Americans had no right to rule themselves. This went against everything the Americans knew. In response, our ancestors risked their “lives, fortunes, and sacred honor” to fight the War for Independence. Against all odds, they won, and in victory formed a stable, lasting republic.

Oman - The Treasure of Mudhmar

To the east of the Arabian desert, an ancient culture developed; and it attainted the sophistication of its civilized neighbours in Mesopotamia & Iran. The extreme aridity of the spot, combined with the strictness of religious prohibitions, discouraged archaeologists for a long period of time. Only recently, a group of French scientists initiated a large-span excavation. Their aim is to comprehend how this society succeeded to prosper, despite a natural environment so hostile to any conditions of life. The answer seems to be the refinement of a revolutionary, water management technique. Yet beyond such technical prowess, this documentary provides a unique look to discover a unique way of life; but also the pre-Islamic religious beliefs of this milieu.
