Don't Give Up – Farmagedon

Millions of farm animals live together with humans in the Czech Republic. They often survive in appalling conditions. For example, over 350 cattle have died on the pastures in the Ore Mountains town of Měděnec in two years, and OBRAZ recently highlighted the living conditions of chickens in some Czech farms. The only thing that often determines the quality of life of animals is the economics of the operation. Is there any way of making life easier for these creatures before their bodies become a meat packet?

La Abuela Chila

In a heartfelt conversation with my paternal grandmother, I gained a deeper understanding of her upbringing, her struggles, and her joys. She shared stories of her selfless sacrifices, working tirelessly in distant places to provide a better life for her sons. Despite her unwavering dedication, she often felt misunderstood and seen as an absent mother rather than the loving and devoted parent she truly was. This poignant insight into her life highlighted the complexities of her experiences and the depth of her love.

The Forest in Me

Epic forests of the Siberian Taiga and black lava landscapes of a Hawaiian volcano are woven through this quietly powerful film that opens out from a personal story about living with uncertainty. In an intimate letter to her young child, the filmmaker builds connections between Agafya Lykova, an elderly woman surviving alone in the Siberian forest since her birth, who scares bears away by banging on space-rocket debris, a crew in Hawaii simulating what isolated life could be on Mars and her young child discovering the world minute by minute. This endlessly surprising journey offers up images that shake ideas of the past, present and future to form a deeply tender vision of humanity and timeless survival on planet Earth. Xylouris White provides a haunting, original score.

Malartic

Ten years after an enormous open-pit gold mine began operations in Malartic, the hoped-for economic miracle is nothing more than a mirage. Filmmaker Nicolas Paquet explores the glaring contrast between the town’s decline and the wealth of the mining company, along with the mechanisms of an opaque decision-making system in which ordinary people have little say. Part anthropological study, part investigation into the corridors of power, Malartic addresses the fundamental issue of sustainable and fair land management.

The Murder of June Knightly

On 19 February 2022, June Knightly and other members of an anti-fascist affinity group in Portland, Oregon were attacked by a right-wing extremist. June was murdered and four of her friends seriously injured. Despite knowing the attack was unprovoked, the Portland Police Bureau released an inaccurate statement suggesting the incident had been a confrontation between an 'armed homeowner' and 'armed protesters'. Forensic Architecture (FA) interviewed witnesses and survivors of the Normandale Park attack using a navigable digital 3D model of the scene, built from previously unpublished video of the attack recorded by one of the victims, drone images and video of the police response posted on social media.

Tinkebell - Who Killed the Blue Bird?

Artist Katinka Simonse, alias Tinkebell, is a controversial, very mediagenic phenomenon. In her universe there is no distinction between life, art and activism; Tinkebell is her own work of art. Everything she encounters on her life path can become part of her story. Filmmaker Judith de Leeuw was given access to all images about Tinkebell, including her entire private archive. She thus constructed an archive film about how as a human being, living on the ruins of the past, you can be a character in your own story. What is the price you can afford if you continue to believe at any cost?

Сергей Астахов, или Механика киноискусства

A film about the life and work of cinematographer Sergei Astakhov, who has directed more than seventy full-length films, including the cult films “Brother” and “Brother-2”, the public’s favorite film “In Love of His Own Will”, and the most complex films of recent times – “Salute” -7”, “Heart of Parma” and many others. The secret of Astakhov’s success is a unique combination of artistic intuition with the talent of an engineer-inventor. The film shows Astakhov in a variety of manifestations: on the set, and during the construction of his house, and during the construction of a chapel, and at a children's Christmas party. And everywhere he is invariably charming with his energy and love of life!

Artwashing

A documentary tour of the most important works of the Czech artwashing scene, which will take the audience through the works and institutions that have aroused controversy and debate among the artistic and professional public. The main question associated with them is whether the work or institution reflects an authentic and legitimate interest in art on the part of its donors or whether it is merely a utilitarian effort to use it as a tool to improve its public reputation and image.
