Rudyard Kipling: A Secret Life

Many people know of the death of Rudyard Kipling's son John - but few know of the earlier death of his much loved daughter Josephine. This film reveals the true story behind both of these deaths, creating an evocation of a man who had remarkable gifts - and had to bear great personal tragedy. Combining touching dramatizations of three of Kipling's most important works with distinguished contributions from his leading biographers, this is a truly remarkable portrait of one of the world's greatest writers. In Kipling's bedroom at his house Bateman's to this day are his son's cricket bat and his daughter's portrait.

France Algérie : une affaire de famille

More than half a century after independence, the Algerian question remains a taboo subject in France and arouses passions. Whatever the words, whatever the decisions, there will always be a side that feels aggrieved. Why does time fail to cure resentment? From the signing of the Evian agreements in 1962 to the skid of the candidate Macron, who was in February 2017 in opposition to the "Pieds Noirs" community for comparing the colonization of Algeria to a crime against humanity. The story is told through the experiences of exiles, activists, former soldiers and politicians, all involved in the events.

The Image You Missed

An Irish filmmaker grapples with the legacy of his estranged father, the late documentarian Arthur MacCaig, through MacCaig's decades-spanning archive of the conflict in Northern Ireland. Drawing on over 30 years of unique and never-seen-before footage, 'The Image You Missed' is an experimental essay film that weaves together a history of the Northern Irish 'Troubles' with the story of a son's search for his father. In the process, the film creates a candid encounter between two filmmakers born into different political moments, revealing their contrasting experiences of Irish nationalism, the role of images in social struggle, and the competing claims of personal and political responsibility.

L'Opéra Hira Gasy de Madagascar

Opera artist Hira Gasy from Madagascar, Emeline Raholiarisoa tells the story of this unique art that an international group is proposing to include as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Born in an artist's village, the author evokes the life of the troupe founded by her father Ramilison (known as Dadamily, Basigara) and more than six centuries of history of her country. The film is also haunted by death: many of the people filmed died of illness or road accidents, because in Madagascar, the health system is in ruins, the bush taxis are rolling coffins, and the drivers, who most often have bought their license, know neither the code nor safe driving. Why so many deaths? In this country, if you are not rich, and you are injured or sick, you die. A rebellious film that invites us to change things profoundly in the largest island in the Indian Ocean.

The Second Attack

As a child Ibrahim Arslan survived the arson attack on his parents’ home in Mölln in which three members of his family were killed. Today he says that his family suffered not just one, but two attacks. After the Molotov cocktails had burnt out, the Arslan family became a target of attacks again, this time coming from the media, politics and society. These attacks were worse than the incendiary devices because they could have been avoided, Arslan says. In her film, Mala Reinhardt asks why even today many victims of radical right-wing violence are forced to live through the same experience of being treated with hostility and criminalised. The victims, who have formed a network, analyse with impressive clarity which conditions make racism still socially acceptable in our country. The essential thing now is to listen to them. 1877: The Grand Army of Starvation

A nationwide rebellion brought the United States to a standstill in the summer of 1877. Eighty thousand railroad workers walked out, joined by hundreds of thousands of Americans outraged by the excesses of the railroad companies and the misery of a four-year economic depression. Police, state militia, and federal troops clashed with strikers and sympathizers, leaving over one hundred dead and thousands injured. The Great Uprising inaugurated a new era of conflict over the meaning of America in the industrial age.
