A Bastard And Pinochet’s Legacy

The story of Pepe, a young Chilean gay man in his 30s, living in Italy, who returns to his homeland and discovers that his biological father - a man he had never met - is none other than Colonel Rodrigo Retamal, the former head of Chilean police intelligence. Retamal, we discover, was convicted of human rights violations, including the killing of six communist activists in 1973, during the early days of Pinochet’s coup. He was punished 20 years later with a night in jail. After a moment of deep confusion, Pepe makes the stunning decision to meet his father and confront him.

Che amore potrebbe popolare questo luogo?

During the third edition of the Sicilia Queer Filmfest, held in 2013, one morning of the festival was dedicated to a discussion between some of the guests. Paul Vecchiali, president of the jury for that edition, Vincent Dieutre, Arnold Pasquier, and Cosimo Terlizzi gathered around a table with Éric Biagi and Andrea Inzerillo, who invited them to discuss a simple question: what is independence in cinema? The conversation, filmed by Valentina Pellitteri and Jean Elia, was then published in two parts in issues 640 and 641-2 of the magazine Filmcritica, edited by Edoardo Bruno, between December 2013 and January 2014.

Custodians

Places belong to those who live there or take care of them and consider them an essential part of their identity. This has nothing to do with ownership or possession: it means constructing, defending and watching over them. True custodians can be recognised due to their deep understanding of the areas in which they live and work, acquired first of all from their parents’ lessons and then from careful observation, dedication and effort. It is an awareness of places carved into their faces and hands, etched into their memories and souls.

Polenta

A family gathers around the dinner table to share a meal of polenta, a traditional peasant dish made of coarsely-ground cornmeal whose secrets are passed down with pride through family lines. Today, the serving of polenta continues to provide a space for communal gathering and intergenerational connection. POLENTA is the culmination of three months of experimentation by Adrian Di Salle, during which time five cameras were set up around the director’s family table to record every dinner served.

The Sail Unfurled

Tucked away in the nooks and crannies of a rocky, snowy landscape, young soldiers appear to be getting ready for an invisible war. The barracks, wind, card games, chatter and above all, the waiting. Through the lens of his still camera, a young medical officer observes this small, faraway village and his castaway companions, collecting hundreds of pictures as others would fill the pages of a diary. The Sail Unfurled is a private account of a common experience, where sharing, friendship, life given to nature are not enough to keep the thoughts of war away.

A Declaration of Love

A man sentenced to death is found innocent and released after 22 years in prison, 19 of them on death row. Now he has to face a new challenge: to survive freedom. Curtis was only 22 when he was sentenced to death for a crime he didn’t commit and spent 22 years in prison, 19 of them in death row, buried alive below ground in a concrete room with no windows, waiting to be executed, in Oklahoma State Penitentiary. “A Declaration Of Love” by Director Marco Speroni, aims to give voice to a man who is being cruelly persecuted by a perverse legal system, digging into his deepest and most hidden emotions. The film is a visual journey through Curtis’s glance and his sense of displacement towards a world where he doesn’t belong anymore. “A Declaration Of Love” is a singular way of addressing the barbarity of the death penalty and also a chance to explore a crucial question: what does “freedom” mean in a society that refuses a person like Curtis despite all he went through?

The Voices of the Harbor

The voices of the harbor are those of thousands of people that have worked there, and of those who still work there today. Like for all cities on the sea, Trieste's history is deeply interrelated with the history of its harbor. The human milieus of the harbor environment are at the foundation of the city, of how the community grew. To understand who we are today, and who we will be tomorrow, we need to reconstruct the memories that tell the story of the last century of the Trieste Harbor. The Harbor will always be there, and the transport of goods is still its main activity, but the ways in which the goods are transported have changed significantly, along with drastic cuts to the harbor's personnel.
