The Invention of the Adolescent

This short documentary studies the fate reserved to young people through the ages. Drawing from paintings, archival footage and various other documents, the film demonstrates that during the 16th and 17th century, young people lived happily alongside their elders. This equilibrium was broken in the 19th century, when the defense of the young and the protection afforded by reformers and educators created the generation gap evident in Western society today. Will dialogue between society’s young and less young ever resume?

Les hommes de la montre

Does man serve the machine or vice versa? This question is at the center of this astonishing commissioned film. We meet a man named Albert Bernet, who lives on a remote farm in the Val de Travers. He is passionate about two professions: Farmer and watchmaker. In 1960, he was one of the dying breed of so-called “peasant-watchmakers” – home workers who were slowly but surely being displaced by factory workers. The production of the film was commissioned by the watch company Ebauches S.A. This makes the director all the more daring as he paints a bleak picture of the new work processes in the precision industry.

Shepherd of the Streets

A KRON-TV Assignment Four documentary report from 1966, narrated by Art Brown, featuring a look at the work of Reverend Donald E. Stuart (1922-2014) for the San Francisco Council of Churches Night Ministry. Includes scenes of Rev. Stuart: walking on the streets of the Tenderloin neighborhood; speaking with a drunk in a hotel; meeting people at Bunnys Coffee Shop and the Intersection Coffee House and chatting with a prostitute (who turned away a client to speak with him). At one point Stuart states that the church: "Should be available to people whenever they need it." He also reflects that people tend to feel more vulnerable to loneliness and despair at night. Note that Rev. Stuart was Night Minister from 1964-76. This film was written and produced by Bob Anderson, directed by Vern Louden, edited by Marie Looney and shot by John Hines. Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.

"For me, The breadth of the bones is an attempt to give the audience experiences and feelings that are a part of themselves but which they choose to deny"--Alan Barker.

Solo

«Lasting barely ninety seconds, the images from 'Solo' show a lone woman who is masturbating with a statue of St Anthony in a domestic and religious setting. It was shown just once at the 5th Jornal do Brasil Mesbla Amateur Film Festival, in 1969. The masculine gaze of the time merely declared these images “iconoclastic”, “erotic” and “comical”. Ashamed by the negative response to her work, the director decided to self-censor, hiding her artistic past and her films from the world» —Izabela Silva.

Floret Academia

In June 1965, Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel celebrated its 300th founding anniversary. What was the university world like back then? How was this event celebrated? And how was it received in student circles? This is what the biting persiflage (described by Denzer himself as a "film feuilleton") "Floret Academia" by Kurt Denzer, a student active at the time in the Film-AG in the Kiel Student Union, reveals to us with a subtle satirical eye. A profound work in which the system-critical spirit of the 1968s already flashes.

The Urban Crisis and the New Militants: Module 7 - Cicero March

For a generation of young activists, the reality of war, imperialism, racism and the growing fragility of democratic liberalism was too much to handle. Force became a means to wrestle with this tension. As the discourse of a “country torn” finds its way into mainstream political analyses (for many the deep divisions in this country are not a new political reality), we should reflect on the writings of political dissidents and radicals. We should recognize the diversity of political analysis that is very much alive. The histories of armed struggle, if taken seriously, provide us with a means to think more critically about the center, and complicate its claims of moral and political right.
