Ferron: Girl on a Road

She has been compared to everyone from Johnny Cash to Bruce Springsteen. A music critic famously wrote of her “What if Bob Dylan had been born a Canadian lesbian?” She once hired an unknown songwriter named Tori Amos as a backup singer, and she has been cited as an influence by everyone from Ani diFranco to the Indigo Girls. We are, of course, speaking of Ferron. No last name needed - just Ferron. And a guitar. In this remarkably intimate documentary, Gerry Rogers chronicles the return of the folk legend as she picks up the pieces after a 10-year absence from music.

Patri A

Dee is a 2nd generation Haitian-Canadian living in Montreal. For the past four years, she’s been able to connect with her mother back home through the Haitian food and festivals sprinkled around the city. Her involvement with Montreal’s Haitian community, however, has been superficial for the most part. In an effort to understand her place within the city and what’s kept her from connecting with her community, she tries to find answers in the story of her mother’s immigration to Quebec in the spring of 1983.

The Cola Conquest

The Cola Conquest tells the story of Coca-Cola - the 'sublimated essence' of all that American stands for - and the century-long competition with its rival, Pepsi-Cola. Challenging, fast-paced, irreverent, serious and funny by turns, it explores the delicious paradox at the heart of Coke: How did an innocuous soft drink come to wield such enormous power and assume such significance in so many people's lives? Escaping History

Ostensibly embarking upon a portrait of a "modern-day Abraham Lincoln", Escaping History traces the development of a relationship between the videomaker and his subject. As the story unfolds, it veers from the objective to the highly personal. The tape relates the story of Mel Glasser, a recovering schizophrenic who, having adopted the persona of Abraham Lincoln, has made considerable progress in the last twenty years. The tape refuses to romanticize Mel's condition; he speaks frankly with intelligence and humour, and takes Applegath on a special journey.

Master of the Rings: The Unauthorized Story Behind J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings"

This documentary examines the social and cultural underpinnings of the trilogy of The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, in an attempt to understand the work's phenomenal success and influence. The program looks for answers in the author's sources of inspiration, from the folk legends of Norway to the field of linguistics of which Tolkien was a lifelong student. It finds that the deep chord the story strikes owes its resonance to the author's use of archetypal imagery and language. Many examples of these recurrent themes and images are given, with readings from the work and other literature. Interviews with the book's illustrators, the brothers Hildebrandt, speak to the power of the imagery in the classic story. Scholars, Tolkien's children, and the author himself provide insight into the mythic themes and the spell they have cast over the vast readership of The Lord of the Rings.
