All-day long eating, chatting, playing cards, and playing with mobile phones, to kill their youth, just to get a high school diploma. Finally, I graduated from high school, but where is the future? Go to work or continue to join a college? Facing such students, it is difficult for teachers to show enthusiasm for teaching. Only Teacher Hou carefully wiped the bulletin board , as always. The original site of Duancun Middle School in Pingyao County was an ancient temple in the Ming Dynasty. In the summer of 2011, more than 150 students from the school merged with two other high schools and moved into the new school in the city. Grass grows on the playground, and the gatekeeper Laomi and his family continue to live in the teaching building.

Wang Peiying, a widow with seven children, was a worker at the Ministry of Railways. The famine precipitated by the Great Leap Forward, which killed perhaps 30 million people by the early 1960s, had horrified her, and as political turmoil began again only a few years later, she publicly called on China’s leader, Mao Zedong, to take responsibility for his mistakes and resign. Ms. Wang was sent to a psychiatric hospital and drugged. Released and paraded around the capital, she refused to recant. Instead, she repeated her accusations. Her jaw was broken to stop her from talking. After a mass trial at the Workers’ Stadium on Jan. 27, 1970, she was executed.

On the small isle of Tap Mun, the ocean breeze gently lifts up strands of grey hair on Lai Lin-shau’s head. He quietly sings in the characteristic tones of the fisherman’s ballads. Seemingly without rules, the pitch and tones alternate and repeat themselves as if they were synchronising with the ocean waves. Lai is one of the few people alive who knows the fisherman’s ballads intimately. None of his children experienced the harsh and unforgiving life at sea. They are not even aware of his priceless knowledge of the ballads. As the fishing community shrinks, old fishermen found new ways of life on land. One performs and teaches the ballads to young children; another uses the ballads to spread her Christian faith. The ballads have become a spiritual harbour for these landed fishermen. But deaths come brutally. Lai loses his listeners and his memory of the ballads. A precious part of him is dying.

They look like modern day gladiators on the outside but fear lurks deep in their hearts as they are forced to fight inside a cage. "Mazu" or "The Sea God" has been the most important religious belief of ordinary people in my hometown for four hundred years. Along the coast of China and even in the Nanyang region, there is at least one temple dedicated to Mazu in various seaside cities-this geographical and historical distribution coincides with the contemporary economic or industrial area of Chinese society. It is frustrating that rapid economic development has led to global warming. The factories located on the coast of southern China from all over the world will eventually cause flooding and inundate these temples dedicated to Mazu. This is indeed a very ironic discovery for our civilization, "We", not only Chinese or all human beings, now or in the past, how can we Chinese avoid this upcoming tragedy?

In 1991, a gruesome double murder was committed in Hsihchih in Taipei. Wang Wen-hsiao, a soldier whose fingerprint was found at the crime scene, was tried, convicted, and executed the following year. Prosecutors apprehended three additional young men and were suspected of torturing the suspects to extract confessions. The three’s death sentences have been appealed repeatedly over the years. Today, they are still waiting for a final outcome. This case of the century has proved to be difficult work even for forensic expert Dr. Henry Lee. Eighteen years of trial have hounded the three men and the victims’ son. They all yearn to unearth the truth and uphold justice. The truth, however, is elusive due to the passage of time and Taiwan’s flawed judicial system. The four young souls held captive in different forms can only continue to spend their lives trying to pursue that taste of freedom that no one else can truly appreciate.

As a Taiwanese in France, I have learnt a few things. There are three things I would like to share with you the most. French is difficult… but there are certain things more difficult than French.

With a rabbit's dead body in hand, a glove puppetry performer reenacts the movements of rabbits as imagined by humans. The project was initiated by the death of a laboratory rabbit, and was inspired by the artist's family memories. The artist's grandma served in an animal laboratory for thirty years, during which, due to the particularity of her job, she had to dissect living animals for observation and experiments.

Sho Watanabe, 77, has worked as a lighting technician for many years, longing to work in the film industry. However, when his wife, Tomiko, suddenly developed Alzheimer's disease, he took a video and 16mm camera and began documenting her and the people around her. This film is the result of compiling and editing the vast amount of film he had accumulated in this way.

The story took place in 2008. Henan Guo Hui, who was a harvester, went to the provinces to harvest wheat for him. He and his father then invited a driver and set off. I went to Shanxi, Shaanxi, and also included Henan. They met other mairs to talk about the earthquake in Sichuan and talk about the difficulties of collecting wheat. Bargaining with the farmers, thinking of the law less to give the leader a little commission, sometimes to think of the way to get money, sometimes to think of ways to escape the control of the leader. The driver complained that the car owner was too bad, and the owner complained that the driver had eaten too much. In the middle of the road, I also encountered the need to collect the toll, and finally met the young and confused.

Passer-by: between Azure, Bisque and Teal, unfolds as a series of uneventfully eventful moments captured in Istanbul. The musical chords accompanying the film, performed with a wind instrument (a melodica) have been based on the weather history of Istanbul, turning Istanbul summer’s statistical data of migration of wind, changes of temperature and sea level pressure into musical notes.

After his Tokyo farewell ceremony, Yamamoto's ashes were sent to Kyoto on March 9. Many friends and citizens gathered at his home in Uji. On the 15th a worker-farmer funeral was held at the Sanjo YMCA. Prokino's Kyoto Branch shot these five days of activities. The long line of cars is filled with taxis, whose drivers deeply admired Yamamoto. The Watanabe in the title refers to the head of the Communist Party of Japan. Watanabe was returning to Japan from Taiwan when he was stopped by authorities. He committed suicide in their custody. Yamamoto and Watanabe were mourned together.

Oriental Honey Buzzard (Pernis ptilorhynchus) is one of the raptors in Taiwan that specifically builds their nests in “ferns”. While other buzzards migrate between cold northern continent and warm southern islands, they prefer to propagate in Taiwan. Ninety-nine Peaks is their major habitat. With different feather colors, this species can only be distinguished from other birds by their long narrow beak and sharp claws. However, it is certain that all oriental honey buzzards love to eat pupa of bees. The Oriental Honey Buzzard of Ninety-nine Peaks is a documentary produced by Raptor Research Group of Taiwan and published by Forestry Bureau, Council of Agriculture Executive Yuan in 2011. This film not only was nominated in the 34th Montana International Wildlife Film Festival but also won the first –run film in the National Ecological Film Festival and the Best Animal Behavior Award at the 2011 Japanese Wildlife Film Festival.

A young woman reminisces on the life of her mother years after her untimely death. “Searching for Her,” is an intimate exploration, told through old photographs and home videos, of a daughter coming to terms with a person she hardly knew. “For some reason I forgot you had emotions,” says the daughter, filmmaker Natalie A. Chao, in a present day hypothetical letter to her mother, “your own style, friends, a love life.” Her reflections form a moving tribute, a poetic re-evaluation of family history, memories, culture, love.

Believing her son is talented at playing the cello, Haesook has devoted herself to his training since he was in middle school. Donghan is accepted into a respected music college, but he drops out before completing even a semester due to biased behavior from professors. Haesook becomes hopeful about her son's independence. However the founder prioritizes the ensemble's marketability over the musicians' artistic growth, deeply distressing Haesook. Donghan receives an offer to work as a teaching assistant in an orchestra Haesook had previously known, and they dream of a new future.

This is a story about a father who drifted from New Zealand to Taiwan to look for his missing son. Although his son was never found after many fruitless searches, he gained love and friendship from many Taiwanese. This documentary tries to trace a father’s journey for searching his beloved son as well as to present how he recovered from his initial pain of losing son and turned it into his love for Taiwan at the end.

Japanese two female singer-songwriters, Kazumi Nikaido (also known as Nika Soup) and Saya Source (of Tenniscoats, Maher Shalal Hash Baz). Nika is known for her chameleon-like ability to transform her voice, while Saya has a melancholic and straightforward singing style. Both have distinct voices that can be identified immediately, but when they sing in unison, they create melodies that are truly sublime. They have released charming album IPIYA (2005) features playful pop songs reminiscent of nursery rhymes, repetitive mantra-like tracks. The two went back and forth from their homes in Hiroshima and Tokyo to create beautifully diverse songs for this record. This is the documentary of "how" and "why" and also "where" they had made the very original music. Many interviews, rehearsals, free sessions, live performances are included. There is a childlike innocence to this documentary, and offers a peak into the unique world of how they make music.

The Good Daughter is a portrait of the fraught marriage between a Taiwanese man and his Vietnamese bride. Born out of a disabled man's wish to obey his mother and a woman's effort to help her family escape poverty, the marriage has produced two daughters and a complicated drama. The film takes us inside a household simmering with tensions.

Shimokajiro Housing Complex is a public reconstruction housing complex for people evacuated from Namie, Futaba, Okuma, and Tomioka, as a result of the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. In this housing complex, where people gather from different places and where many elderly dwell, they began making and distributing CDs on music they remember, also putting on a show as if they were running a radio program, and even forming a band to play along with the rhythm of each singer. This film is a record of these unusual support activities for the disaster-stricken areas, connected by music to transcend the times and the COVID-19 pandemic.

A documentary providing a close-up look at 25-year-old music label Less Than TV which introduced or launched many bands in the 90s such as Guitar Wolf, bloodthirsty butchers, among others. It is directed by Oishi Noriko who has worked on the live DVDs and music videos of numerous artists both at home and abroad. Rooted in punk and hard core, Less Than TV has introduced all manner of artists with "entertainment" as its only pursuit. When working in Tokyo, Erika embarks on the journey of stepping outside the role prescribed by her biological sex and relieving the suppressed feminine self. This film documents Erika’s life journey of gradually building up her ideal body image, including the sexual reassignment surgery (SRS). Through Erika’s experience moving between Japan and Taiwan, as well as male and female identities, the film sheds light on the unique life experience of transgender people.

Soe, Joe, and Tommy came from a land they call ‘Burma.’ They are illegal foreign workers in Korea. Hard work worn them out, but they hold onto their lives with a sole pride; being a breadwinner for the family back home. On the weekends, they comfort themselves with bottles of hard liquors. Soe and Joe are determined to go back home finally after a decade, but Tommy is determined not to go back until he can make a flashy return with good sum of money.

As they play carefree music, their musicianship is met with surprise, wonder, and sometimes even laughter. Captivating all who watch, Otoasobi Project’s rich variety of expression reshapes the concept of improvised music. Formed in 2005 in Kobe, Japan, Otoasobi Project has some 50 members, including people with intellectual disabilities, musicians, and music therapists, who pursue music and well-being through improvised performances. After many years of numerous workshops, concerts, and other activities, they even held their first tour in the UK in September 2013. The movie “Whereabouts of Sound” depicts the appeal of the improvised music Otoasobi creates, and the beauty of its natural, honest expression.

Shenzhen River (the border btw Hong Kong and Shenzhen), and the Second Line of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone (the border between Socialism China and Capitalism China) were compared to the Berlin Wall. The Second Line were constructed June 1982, demolished June 2015. The First Line (Shenzhen River) still flows, running deeper and deeper after 1997. Artist Miaoyuan LONG and Zen LU (the ON/OFF media Group) documented major checkpoints along these two boundaries. It’s a piece to illustrate the Big Escape (Touch Base Policy) from mainland China to Hong Kong during 1950-70’s and the geopolitical history of Shenzhen. The 48min audio-visual live performance version was Official selection of Draft Systems 2017 WRO Media Art Biennale, Poland.

Fu-Xuan is my classmate and friend. As a man who yearns for freedom, he has a cat. From January 12 to January 18, 2024, Fuxuan wanted to take me to meet Sesame, but she ran away.

My family has lived in a house across from the Blue House, the presidential palace, for 50 years. During the era of military dictatorship, the Blue House was a place of fear and inaccessibility. But as South Korea democratized, more and more people were allowed to approach it. I had grown up surrounded by countless protests, but it was the first time their sound followed me home. The never-ending noise made the house where I was born and raised feel unfamiliar. But the place they now stood was the very spot where I had held a candle to protest just months before. My right to raise my voice also guarantees theirs.
