Pirenópolis – O Divino e as Máscaras

It is the first film produced at the extinct ICA (Instituto Central de Artes), in a co-production between UnB (Universidade de Brasília) and the also extinct INC (Instituto Nacional de Cinema). Held at the Festa do Culto ao Mito do Divino Espírito Santo in Pirenópolis, state of Goiás, in 1968, it was completed in 1969, in Rio de Janeiro. The film is extremely important for the memory of Brazilian popular culture and the state of Goiás, as it is a work of art about this popular festival, and not just a documentary record, as it reflects its cultural character. Today the party is considered Cultural Heritage of Brazil by IPHAN.

A Gondola for New Venice

Venetian gondola installed in an artificial lake moves the life of a small town in southern Santa Catarina where 95% of the 13 thousand inhabitants are descendents of Italians from the Veneto region. Only four gondolas were officially donated by Italy, the others are in Toronto/Canada, Saint Petersburg/Russia, and Las Vegas/USA. The documentary recovers the history of the coming of this gondola to Brazil and reflects on why it rekindled the sense of Italian identity in the town. They even have the “Carnival of Venice”, and the festivity gathers hundreds of masked party goers in costumes made by local artisans.

Dragon Tooth

The second-biggest nuclear accident in the world happened in Goiânia, capital of Goiás, Brazil. In September 1987, two scrap collectors looking through an abandoned clinic (Goiânia Radiotherapy Institute) found an old radiotherapy device. Moved by curiosity with the machine, they took it to a junkyard, where they disassembled it and extracted a capsule containing a blue powder that glowed in the dark. From that night onwards, the radiation spread unseen throughout the city, contaminating more than a hundred people, leaving deep marks and traumas. From a collage of contaminated images, radioactive ghosts emerge, embedded in the history of that place.

20 Cents

"20 Centavos" is a feature-length documentary that portrays the social and political unrest triggered by the fight against the raise in the rates of public transport in Sao Paulo and follows all the developments, on a national scale, of these early protests. Its main characters are the streets, the public spaces taken by the voice of the protesters. Its speech is constructed by billboard after billboard, from claim to claim. The result is a portrait, with more than realistic textures, of zeitgeist, a spirit of an era unknown in Brazil, marking the emergence of a new form of political activism that comes from a deep crisis with the idea of representative democracy.

Candeias: Um Ser do seu Tempo

Ozualdo Candeias was a grumpy truck driver. He never lost the verve of this strange form of freedom, trapped in the cab and facing the varied itineraries of the world. Among the many jobs he held, he was also that of a filmmaker in Boca do Lixo, at a time when making films lacked pride and friends. He had both in abundance. His complexity can now be revisited in a process of image and sound collages, guided by a frank and reflective conversation, recorded at the end of 1997, about the cinema of yesterday, but also about today.
