Brotherhood of Skiing

In 1973, being a black skier was a lonely endeavor, one that came with racism and alienation. That year, the National Brotherhood of Skiers formed as a way to bring black skiers together to ski, celebrate and build community. With its annual summits and thriving youth organizations, the NBS has grown into a well-loved ski establishment. Along with torching the myth that black people don’t ski, the NBS continues to engender the next generation of black skiers. “It’s a beautiful sport,” one young participant says. “And I wish it was more accessible to everyone. I guess that’s where our ski club comes in.”

Boondockin’

Join independent film maker, former comedian and, somewhat sadly, Bigfoot believer Scott “Squatch” Herriott as he, his girlfriend Cory and his pooch/good pal Charlie drive across the U.S. in their Class C camper/truck in search of National Forest and BLM land that is still relatively remote, beautiful AND free to stay at for awhile. Not only do they dock in the Boonies but they also stop and visit some bizarre sights along the way…including part of Hitler’s toilet and a Bob’s Big Boy in the middle of a field in the middle of nowhere. Oh, the Majesty and the Madness…Boondockin’!

I Don't Cry

“Stroma's funeral” or “grandmother” is the name of the three-day rite, which is held every year in the village of Shutilovo, Nizhny Novgorod region. In its spirit, it is the folk carnival, about which Mikhail Bakhtin and Francois Rabelais wrote: a change of appearance, general merriment, plenty of food, drink, indecent words and deeds. During this game of death and burial, there is no place for genuine grief. But when things are going awry in the non-holiday life of a Russian village, it is very difficult not to cry.

The Return of the Bears

For centuries, bears have been relentlessly hunted and exterminated in Europe. In recent years, reintroduction programs, initiated by the European Union in particular, have aimed to re-establish these mammals in their former habitat, such as the Pyrenees or northern Italy. But the return of the bears is not without consequences, and is generating opposition. Breeders fear material damage caused by the reintroduced animals and, although rare, attacks on humans have been recorded in the past. In other European countries, such as Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia, people have learned to live with bears over the centuries.
