Olímpicos

Olímpicos tells the stories of Uruguayan athletes preparing to reach the highest sporting contest: the Olympic Games. The film portrays these athletes in their daily sacrifice in order to reach Rio de Janeiro 2016. What is it like to be an Olympian in Uruguay? is the main question that this work asks, which includes essential discussion topics for high performance competition in a country depopulated of resources and interest for the so-called “minor sports”. However, this film goes beyond the anecdote and the local context to discover individual universes and universal stories of the human character.

The Other Mexico

"The Other Mexico" focuses on that nation's poor and indigenous citizens who have no voice in the political system. Many of them have gravitated to the growing Zapatista movement led by its leader, Subcomandante Marcos. Some feel Marcos is a true folk hero while others view him as an opportunist seeking personal fame. Leading journalists and scholars debate the pros and cons of the movement as it tries to organize the country's disaffected before the 2006 presidential election.

Africa's Secret Seven

We take an exclusive peek into the mysterious lives of the most secretive animals of the African Bushveld. For the first time ever, we take an exclusive peek into the mysterious lives of the most secretive animals of the African Bushveld. We will expose the behaviors of these animals seldom, if ever, seen before as we delve into the shadowy existence of animals rarely seen, let alone captured on television. We will investigate seven enigmatic creatures - the serval, aardvark, pangolin, genet, African wildcat, civet and porcupine - as they furtively go about their top-secret activities. Each story will introduce us to one of these animals, and give us a privileged glimpse into their extremely private lives and their particular adaptations for life in the dangerous wilderness, where they battle against tremendous odds. We witness how each one cunningly outwits the super-predators in its own special way, with extra-sharp senses and other strategies for survival.

Il mulín

"Not so long ago we were owners of our land, but when they built the road, the last mill in the valley stopped working. We lost sovereignty. Today we are going to cut the road and recover the grain. Do we have to ask for permission for that? Because we are owners of our territory?" In the last town of Cunqueiro, a group of neighbors organizes to recover the grain after a mistake that others made when building the new road. "Il mulín", with the Asturian forests as a backdrop, shows the importance of neighborhood and family as an act of rebellion.

Forbidden People

Constitutionally precluded from claiming any right to self-determination, the Catalans stick to their guns. The separatist movement is gaining ground in Catalonia. Notwithstanding the Spanish Constitution (which states that Spain is indivisible, making any referendum thereby unconstitutional), 2.3 million people voted in the November 2014 de facto referendum. The results speak for themselves: 81% of Catalans are in favour of independence. Seizing this historic moment, filmmaker Alexandre Chartrand gives a voice to the civil society figures who have been propelled to centre stage in national politics.

Glass Bottom Ferry. On Borders and Submerged Utopias

This audiovisual essay dives into the complexity of the border space from three European enclaves located in African territory: Ceuta, Melilla and the Canary Islands. The film plunges into the gap that unites and separates Africa and Europe, in search of the ruins and ghosts from the wreckage of the utopias that have grown on both sides: Europe as a promised land for the dispossessed South and Africa as a paradise for the exotic-hungry North.

Las manos en la tierra

A group of archaeologists from the University of the Republic enters, for the first time in Uruguayan history, into a barracks to dig for the remains of persons imprisoned-disappeared during the military dictatorship. Only one year earlier, not even the boldest observer would have dared predict such a possibility. After one hundred days of digging, the earth reveals its secret: the first remains appear. The documentary reconstructs the process that cuts the country’s history in two: before and after.
