A Little Bit From Everywhere

We're all descended from immigrants if we dig deep into our roots. We all belong to a place, but that place doesn't belong to us. This is the conclusion reached by actor Alex O'Dogherty, as he continues the research his father began into the history of his surname. Not all descendants of immigrants are treated equally. It depends on where they come from and the color of their skin. Alex tries to find out who he is, searching for where he comes from, only to discover that he's from... a little bit of everywhere.

Decoding Thoughts

Decoding Thoughts is a ten-minute behind the scenes mini-documentary following the creation of Thoughts Become Things, a six-minute short poetry film rooted in the Bermudian Gombey tradition. The documentary explores how a team of Bermudian creatives built a work of poetic fiction authentically grounded in oral history, featuring candid interviews with the filmmakers, Gombey captains from several of Bermuda's active troupes speaking about the tradition and its future, and a Gombey mother who reflects on raising her sons inside a living cultural practice. Decoding Thoughts reveals the creative process, the cultural collaboration, and the community at the heart of the project.

Sharp Objects

‘Sharp Objects’ follows the forgotten story of the Klungkung keris back to its origins and to its post-colonial relevance to Bali today, tracing the looting of the keris to modern day tourism in Bali. The film juxtaposes the 'knowledge' of colonial archives against community-based knowledge and mythology, convoluting the understanding of what is preserved, what is dead and what is lost. The artists apply a tangible intervention on the photochemical material they use for the film. This time consuming approach embodies the narrative of the labor intensive iron forging craftmanship of a keris blacksmith.

Blackout Dreams

In Cuba, the nights are very dark indeed when there’s yet another power outage—but as much as possible, life goes on. People find their way around in the pitch dark, cyclists loom out of the blackness, children hang out on the streets by the light of flashlights. At the same time, the disruption appears to create intimacy: a priest takes the opportunity to open the Bible by candlelight and reads about the creation of light and darkness, an aged blind singer plays the guitar for his wife in their bedroom, a boy and his teacher play endless games of chess in the half-light, a fisherman heads calmly into the water with a lantern. Headlights from passing cars flash over houses shrouded in darkness, while the people inside sing and talk under the glow of portable lights.

Panic Button

The cooperation of Central Asian countries such as Kyrgyzstan helps Russia resist Western economic sanctions. Due to the country’s strategic location, all Chinese goods bound for Central Asia and Russia must cross its borders, and it serves as a transshipment point for goods from countries with which Putin is not officially allowed to trade. Investigative journalist Ali Toktakunov, a long-time staff member of Radio Free Europe’s Kyrgyz section, helped to uncover the deeper implications.

1980 Sabuk

In April 1980, a massive "disturbance" erupted in Sabuk, a town in Jeongseon County, Gangwon Province. Over 3,000 miners, pushed to the brink by relentless surveillance and exploitation, seized control of the area and clashed with authorities. A last-minute deal was struck, narrowly averting the deployment of martial law forces and a potential bloodbath. Nevertheless, the conflict resulted in numerous casualties. Even now, more than four decades later, the scars of this event remain deeply etched in the community's collective memory.
