Nollywood, Smara

Smara is the city of dust, kingdom of sirocco, a surviving ruin of a suffocating region… Thousands of Sahrawis who fled Western Sahara after the war against Morocco (36 years ago) live in this refugee camp, located in the Sahara’s inhospitable north, in the middle of the Algerian hamada. They live here, under poor human conditions, thanks to international help. A small film cooperative fights, with barely any means, to elevate the voices of young Saharawis. It is one of the many Nollywoods (Hollywood of emptiness) found in Africa.

Benigno

There are people who spend their entire lives in the same house, their childhood home where their family history rests. Benigno, at eighty-eight years old, still sleeps, eats, and dreams in the home where he was born, the home that is rooted in the earth to reach for the sky. The house stands alone, alongside Benigno and his tortoise Totó, adrift in the limbo of memories, the ritual of daily life, and the anticipation of the final day. Adjacent to the house is his vegetable garden, which he visits daily to tend to his chickens and work the soil with the seeds inherited from his ancestors, which he ceremoniously catalogs and preserves.

El futuro es nuestro

The documentary tells the story of a group of students from the National High School of Buenos Aires, who in the early 1970s led and formed the Union of Secondary Students. They were between the ages of 15 and 19. They lived through days marked by love, activism, clandestinity, and danger, until state terrorism violently interrupted their adolescence. Today, many of them are missing. Others have returned from exile. The previously unseen images of those days are fragments of memories, woven together by the survivors' accounts as a testimony for new generations.

We Are All Stars

Five years have passed since the death of his brother and Felipe has just decided to uncover Pandora's box. Thus begins this intimate tale of a completely disenchanted man who lives locked up in a garage, between gloomy memories and the ghost of guilt. Although his paralysis is much older: it is related to his film career, with the bankruptcy of his film company, with his political disillusionment, with the failure of his generation to stop violence in the country and with his sexual orientation.

Navarra, las cuatro estaciones

A sample of the most relevant and characteristic aspects of traditional Navarran culture: carnivals, pilgrimages, crafts involving farm implements and tools, agricultural work, patron saint festivals, and other manifestations of rural society and folklore unfold over 150 minutes at the pace set by the seasons. The film is a reference document of prime importance on traditional Navarrese society, which was beginning to disappear in the years when the film was shot due to the rapid transformation of the region into an industrialized society. More than thirty years later, this process has been almost completely accomplished, giving the film a unique added historical value.

Living There Is Not Hell, It Is the Fire of the Desert. The Plenitude of Life That Stayed There Like a Tree

The wind, the birds, the sweat, the hands, the wheelbarrow, the drought and the burial. Could it be possible to disappear in the desert? Totoral is a village that fades away behind its hills. A village that emerged and learned from the land and its animals, and from staying safe. The desert is constantly changing, the trees dry up, and they, the men, with their animals, wipe away their footsteps and their presence as time goes by.

El ritual del alcaucil

On the outskirts of Buenos Aires, there is a neighborhood built around two cemeteries. Amidst virgins and pagan offerings, the elders recite memories and forget ghosts. Children invent their childhoods with graves and hammocks. Oblivion is a territory where these creatures glide, feeling the passage of time, even though they are no longer part of it. Fears wander among the shadows of the disappeared; there is silence where voices should have been, and the everyday becomes ritual.
