Death at the River

The rivers of Africa bring life and abundance to their inhabitants, but they can also be the arena for some of nature's most significant challenges and dramas. Harsh seasonal cycles dictate the course of life - and death - along the rivers. Only the fittest survive crossing the crocodile-infested Mara, the extreme drought of the Luangwa Valley or any of the many other perils harboured by rivers all over the continent. With cunning and opportunistic hunters of all sizes lurking in the waters or prowling the banks, Africa's rivers are a predator's paradise

Alfonso Salido Zambrana, 59, has been battling colon cancer since September 2021, the most diagnosed cancer in Spain and the second deadliest. Although the advanced cancer diagnosis was a heavy blow, Alfonso didn’t give up his active life and dedicated even more energy to cycling, a passion he discovered at 44. Since his diagnosis, he has competed in UCI events in Coimbra, a world cycling championship in Glasgow in 2023, and the Spanish and Andalusian championships. His children, Francisco and Verónica, are also cyclists, and she started riding to support her father. Three years later, Alfonso remains full of life and motivation. He rides about 60 kilometers a day, except on chemotherapy days, which are every two weeks. The physical exhaustion from the treatment, he says, fades away as he pedals on the road.

The Front Line of Ideology

One year after the Korean War, the conflict had reached a stalemate. The two opposing forces began to search for a way to end the grueling war of attrition, eventually settling on a modest village called ‘Pan Mun Jom’ near Gaeseong as the designated site for negotiations. Despite initial hopes for a quick resolution, the negotiating parties encountered obstacles that prevented an agreement. Disputes over the military demarcation line and the repatriation of prisoners of war thwarted their efforts. The film peels back the layers to reveal the untold story of Pan Mun Jom, shedding light on a history that has remained hidden until now.

A Farewell To Alexei Navalny. Chronicling The Funeral

On March 1, Alexei Navalny's funeral took place in Moscow, with thousands gathering to bid farewell to the politician. The day before, Moscow police erected metal fence corridors in the Maryino district and deployed hundreds of security forces and paddy wagons. The funeral service, held at the Church of the 'Assuage My Sorrows' icon, lasted less than 20 minutes. Only family members were permitted to approach the coffin. After the body was lowered into the ground, police allowed the public to say their final goodbyes to the opposition leader. Lines leading to the church and Borisovskoye Cemetery stretched for several hundred meters, and participants in the farewell procession walked through Maryino, chanting slogans such as 'Freedom for political prisoners,' 'No to war,' and 'Navalny is a hero of Russia.' Mediazona accompanied the crowd along the entire route.

If You Want to Fly, Dig

We see impressive videos of the work of drone operators in the media every day. The painstaking work that is done to prepare for it is usually left behind the scenes. And we are talking not just about organizing the flight, but also such trivial things as, for instance, proper arrangement of positions. A well-dug shelter saves lives - this rule is the same both for infantry and for drone pilots. One day in the life of the strike drone unit of the 47th Magura Separate Mechanised Brigade involves digging trenches, joking, combat missions, eating sandwiches under shelling, and digging trenches again. Because the better a fighted digs, the longer he lives.

Warum Judenhass? Antisemitismus in Deutschland

Since the massacre by the terrorist organization Hamas on October 7, 2023, it has been clear that anti-Semitism is also a massive problem in Germany. The media reports on anti-Semitic incidents almost every day. Jews no longer feel safe and are often victims of discrimination and hatred. More than 75 years after the liberation of Auschwitz, Jewish life in Germany is still often exposed to anti-Semitic hostility. Schools, kindergartens and synagogues must be guarded. In the wake of pro-Palestinian demonstrations on German streets, aggressive anti-Semitic agitation by angry Islamist mobs is increasingly occurring. Politics is failing to act on its promise. But the breeding ground for this is older. The documentary attempts to show that, based on age-old hatred, stereotypes and prejudices, anti-Semitism from the right-wing, from left-progressive circles and the middle of society is omnipresent in Germany.

Dream Factory

'Dream Factory' is a personal essay on the power of storytelling and the magic and contradictions that is the Indian film industry. The hybrid documentary follows the precarious lives of the "below-the-line" crew of a big-budget Bollywood film, from the perspective of an Indian woman's ambivalent relationship with her culture's myth-making machinery. It is a reverie on the intensely physical, yet invisible, labor behind India's most popular art form. Borrowing Bollywood's grammar to tell the stories of its most marginalized workers, the film raises questions about the price that must be paid to manufacture dreams for a billion people – and who pays.
