Själö - Island of Souls

Själö means 'the island of souls', and no name could be more fitting for the island in the Baltic Sea, which for centuries was a last stop for women who were considered social outcasts – and who are today forgotten. They were forcibly placed in a closed institution to be studied, measured and weighed – exactly in the way that nature itself was starting to be examined around the same time. Today, the place is a research centre. A young female scientist collects samples on the island, while the whispering voices of the past and never-sent letters echo in the empty hallways.

My America

The United States is considered a symbol of freedom, the great social experiment made of democratic principles, equality, and the pursuit of happiness. But does this ideal of prosperity and individual freedom reflect the life of all American citizens? My America recounts today's United States: a nation grappling with increasingly complex social problems and heightened political tensions that have weakened the distinctive characteristics of what is considered the most powerful democracy in the world. Besides this social malaise, there is also the ability and determination of regular citizens who try to challenge and repair the country's moral fiber.

Like the Dyer's Hand

The legendary life of Ye Jiaying (1924-), a master of Chinese classical poetry. She went through war, political persecution, and wandering overseas all her life. She returned to China after the reform and opening up in her later years, and continued to create and inherit teaching, which was the lifeblood of classical poetry interrupted by the Cultural Revolution. The film interweaves Ye Jiaying's personal life with Chinese classical poetry for thousands of years, showing the significance track of her seeking existence in the long river of poetry. "Du Fu's Eight Episodes of Qiuxing" is the most important research masterpiece in Ye Jiaying. The eight poems of Qiuxing depict the rise and fall of China's prosperous Tang Dynasty. This film uses this as a metaphor for the turbulent years experienced by Mr. Ye, and invites musician Sato Congming to create film music based on the eight poems of Qiuxing, combining elegant music and modern music, bringing new life to Du Fu's poetry.

Barthes*

“There is no country but childhood's” said Roland Barthes in a lovely text simply entitled "The Light of the South Wes"t. This region that he had chosen from them all, Urt on the banks of the Adour, the village sheltering his mother’s house. He would often come here to rediscover his pleasure in writing: “The pleasure of these mornings in U.: the sun, the house, the roses, the silence, the music, the coffee, the work, the a-sexual calm, a break from aggressions.” It is here that he now rests in the same grave, close to the maternal breast.

Makina!

In the North East of England there is a strange and hyper localised genre you have in all likelihood never heard of. It’s called Makina. Emerging in the late nineties it fused European hard dance genres and became the instrumental backing to a generation of MCs who used it to talk about the intimate details of their lives, whilst hyping crowds at 180bpm. It's the sound that builds community and exorcises demons. The sound that embraces difference and channels sensitivity. It's the sound of loss, deprivation and joy. It's tradition, identity, folksong; it's the sound of the North East.

"Ghazal no 884" by Poet Bidel Dehlavi is read by a friend, sent as a voice message on Whatsapp as soothing company to calm the grieving moment. Mirza Abdul-Qader Bidel (Bidel Dehlavi) was born in 1644 in (Azim Abad) Penta, India. The themes of his poems are influenced by multitudes of philosophies including Hindu, Sufi and Islamic traditions. Following the ideas of Ebn al-ʿArabī, he considered air (an aspect of nafas-e Raḥmānī, the breath of the Compassionate) to be the foundation of the world and spirit. Everything else –minerals, plants, animals –are viewedas the product of nature, which itself emerged from a single word brought into being through the articulation of “the breath of the Compassionate”.
