Luminous Variations in the City Skies

At Bologna’s Specola Tower, 1932–1957, an optical technology was invented which would revolutionize astronomy. The tower’s four floors were perforated and a series of hexagonal mirrors was installed at its base, creating a giant telescope of 2×24 meters. A mobile camera was set at right angles to the mirrors and thousands of glass plates where exposed which offered a systematic overview of the city’s zenithal sky. Thirty years of research were necessary for the astronomer Guido Horn D’Arturo to invent the specchio a tasselli—also called multimirror or segmented mirror—an archetype of today’s most advanced telescopes. Horn D’Arturo’s photographic plates are now also full of spots and traces of deteriorated emulsions. This film is composed of scans and blow-ups of these plates.

The Island of Rhodes

Short Italian travelogue film about Rhodes. Idyllic shots of a couple in love in the woods and by the sea are followed by images of Italian naval ships that "cross the waters around their new occupation". Finally, there is a staged shot of a cannon firing a shot, with the Italian tricolor and the coat of arms of the company Savoia appearing over the statue. The island of Rhodes, which had been part of the Ottoman Empire since 1522, was conquered by the Italians in 1912.

Fiori di Strada - We Are Not the Crazy Ones

The film is a reflection on the medieval folk tradition of "benandanti" ("good walkers"), who believed they had special powers to fight witches, ogres and demons threatening harvests and children. Who are the "benandanti" of today and who are the witches and ogres of our times? Can these assigned roles be put into question? The film analyses three stories, trying to recover the sense of truth and the truth of the sense, starting from the relations between individuals and the respect that every statement of the human race deserves.
