Ireland - Celtic Magic

A land full of cliffs, streams, dotted with lakes and peat bogs, buffeted by strong sea winds... One of the most fascinating countries in Europe, but above all, one of the most mysterious. An island at the mercy of the sea winds, washed by the Atlantic and the waters of the Celtic and Irish seas. The island's beauty can be found in its rugged coastline, dramatic cliffs, streams, lakes and peat bogs. But above all, Ireland is a country full of spectacular stories. Its Celtic myths and legends have shaped its culture and our imagination. An air of mystery still hovers over the country of over 70,000 square kilometres. This is reflected in traditions, beliefs, folk music. This is also the legacy of thousands of years of history in an extraordinary land where, according to legend, giants and fairies still hide in the rocks and caves.

Ted Joans: Exquisite Corpse

In 2001, David Hammons filmed Ted Joans unfolding the long artwork across the floor of the New York apartment of Robin D. G. Kelley and Diedra Harris-Kelley. Together with the artist Laura Corsiglia, they discuss each drawing and the creative and personal histories of the seemingly endless contributors. The camera follows the piece from fold to fold, emphasizing its physicality, the active process required to engage with it, the impossibility of viewing it in its entirety all at once. The artwork collapses into fragments but links its international participants, folding, unfolding, obscuring, revealing, connecting across great distances. In the end David Hammons adds his own drawing, continuing the long-distance transmission.

Hafa

During a research stay in Tangier, I worked around the story of Omar Ba, a Senegalese migrant in transit. From this experience emerged an exchange of films and objects. A child’s sandal, a piece of fabric, a jerrycan, a prayer notebook became the obsessive focus of another quest, a new mythology. This raises the question of how to preserve the memory of these migratory narratives. Here, staged in a cinematic essay with the dancer Barbara Sarreau, this question is explored through the lens of tragedya tragedy from which we will surely have to learn to be reborn one day...

Judenrein

The place of memories and the struggle against oblivion can take many forms, something that is transversal to these two films and the work of Daniel Blaufuks. In Judenrein, meaning free of Jews, the director examines amateur footage of the 1980s in a small Polish village, rescued to find answers about his story, in a biographical reflection. In Levantados do Chão, a philharmonic band traverses an abandoned hotel in the Azores, and the emptiness left by the ruins thus refers to a past that is still present and prevalent.
