El Mito de Inkarri

The Myth of Inkarri is a short film shot on 35mm high-contrast black and white film. Using the traditional stop-motion technique, the 17th-century drawings of chronicler Felipe Guamán Poma de Ayala were reused without alteration to produce the famous myth of Inkarri. The short film narrates and recreates scenes in which the Spanish decapitate Inkarri and take his head to Lima; according to the legend, the head is alive and when it is reunited with the other parts of the body, a new Inca will be formed.

Cezanne

A film record of an exhibition of the late work of Paul Cezanne, organized by The Museum of Modern Art and the Reunion des Musees Nationaux in Paris. The camera moves across details of paintings, as well as details of Cezanne’s studio, providing an intimage, close-up view of the artist’s work. The Distant Drummer: Bridge from No Place

This film describes the 1960s drug culture. Addicts discuss their experiences in the United States and in Vietnam. Dr. Stanley Yolles, director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), talks about the drug culture and the NIMH role in prevention and treatment. The tape describes growth in the use of marijuana and heroin. In 1966, the Narcotic Addict Rehabilitation Act is the first law to give the addict a choice of treatment or jail. Synanon in California is a private, self-help, residential community that helps people deal with their addictions. New York's Daytop Village works not only with addicts on addictions, but on developing a new lifestyle. Methadone, though still experimental, has proved to be an effective treatment for heroin addiction.

Dink: A Pre-Blues Musician

James “Dink” Roberts (1894–1989) grew up in the “Little Texas” community of Alamance County in piedmont North Carolina and made his living growing tobacco as a tenant farmer. But early in his life he learned the clawhammer banjo style from the older children of an uncle who raised him and from other black banjo players in the community. The film shows him in his family setting performing several kinds of music—playing banjo and singing dance songs, dramatic banjo songs, and even early country blues performed on guitar.

Socialist Slovenia’s first feature-length experimental film, DAILY NEWS was shot in 1980 on Super-8mm by then-26-year-old Franci Slak, who would go on to become an acclaimed industry director. As its title suggests, the film is a diary in which the author records his observations of the outside world; as Silvan Furlan writes, it “evokes with a certain nostalgia those golden days of the underground, when the freedom of filmmaking was written in capital letters.” Film theorist Jože Dolmark appraised it best: “the film contains a desire to record (not strictly chronologically) the experience of a lived day: what happened to you, what you experienced, or which is more interesting, what you would like the day to look like, according to how you’ve imagined it. I think the entire power of DAILY NEWS lies in this desire of Franci’s for what remained unspoken, what slipped, what remained outside the edges, and what we’ll never know.”

Violin Power

Steina trained as a classical violinist, pushing her experience as a professional musician into the electronic realm with this seminal work. Originally performed in the late 1970s as a live recital with monitors, "Violin Power" began with the idea of generating a video image solely through the sound and movement of the bow. This signal switch, from audio to visual, grew in possibilities and variances as technology continued to expand in the ensuing decades. The most recent iteration of this performance involved Steina working with a MIDI violin and laptop.

TsOKS in Alma-Ata

In August 1941, two largest Soviet film studios Mosfilm and Lenfilm were evacuated to Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan. There, together with the newly founded Alma-Ata Film Studio, they were merged into TsOKS (Central United Film Studio), which became the main center of film production in the country until 1944. Now Kazakh film industry veterans who worked at the studio during these years recall the dawn of national cinema and years of work with Eisenstein, Pudovkin, Romm and others.

Bekim Fehmiu Visits Albania

Albania and neighboring Yugoslavia officially broke ties in 1948. But in 1971, the Hoxha regime was honored to welcome the ethnic Albanian actor Bekim Fehmiu (1936-2010), at the time an international star in Yugoslav theater and film. Before his trip to Albania, Fehmiu had appeared in the popular Italian television smash The Odyssey (1968) and the Cannes-winning I Even Met Happy Gypsies (1967). Dokufest will also feature a photo exhibit of recently-discovered still images taken during Bekim Fehmiu’s Albanian visit.

Women Metalworkers

In the late seventies, a group of Brazilian documentary filmmakers traveled to the ABC region in the suburbs of São Paulo with the purpose of recording a wave of worker strikes taking place in response to the negligence of the increasingly powerful and abusive automotive industry. Documenting striking women metal workers, Olga Futemma and Renato Tapajós’ Trabalhadoras Metalúrgicas is a particularly vigorous work among the films produced during this moment in São Paulo worker history. Scenes filmed during the first Congress of Metallurgical Women of São Bernardo and Diadema in 1978 are intercut with images documenting the appalling working conditions against which the women featured in the congress were striking.
