Learning to Fly

Aisha McAdams, a former competitive runner turned photographer, embarks on a journey to document the triumphs and struggles of famed ultra trailrunners, including Jim Walmsley and Eszter Csillag. Traveling to mythical races—the Western States Endurance Run in the mountains of eastern California, the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc in the French Alps—the film marvels at athletes who maintain their intensity as they run 100 miles of mountain trails while climbing thousands of vertical feet.

KURSAAL

"Kursaal" is a short 360-degree documentary dedicated to the CineKursaal in Rumelange, Luxembourg's oldest movie theater, which opened in 1911 and never closed since. The CineKursaal went through the Nazi occupation, survived the devastation of World War II, resisted the growing success of television in the 1970s, and renewed itself by automating the projection room in the late 1980s. Not even the advent of multiplexes, the temporary closure of theaters due to the pandemic, and the growing success of streaming platforms were able to interrupt the CineKursaal's glorious history. Through the personal recollections of its owner Raymond Massard, great-grandson of Conrad Massard who first managed the cinema in 1911, the short documentary tells the story of a cultural infrastructure rooted in Luxembourg's history. Archival materials and immersive video overlap in an intimate narrative that celebrates the cinema's past, reflects on its present, and looks to its future.

The County in the Fog

A small village dominates the Oglio river valley, once on the border between the Republic of Venice and the Duchy of Milan... its name is Barco and it is dominated by the castle of a branch of the powerful Martinengo family, for centuries masters of the "County in the fog". The documentary by Mario Bonetti and Giovanni Zanotti, sponsored by the Province of Brescia, offers a journey back in time, between the splendor of an ancient county and the end of peasant civilization. It tells the origins, history, art, present and future of a magical Italian village. From the voices of those who have lived in the country emerge unique and exciting stories that bring back old memories of a world that no longer exists.

Permission

In London, they lament it and welcome him, but everyone is inside their shell. And they obey indifferently. Society divided into classes. Indians run minimarkets. The British are superior beings. Progress within the rules set by business. Private property is sacred. The owner and his slaves keep watch. Every corporation, company, or luxury store has one or more employees who watch, control, and spy. In the British Library, I counted 50. You can't enter any reading room without a pass. Police officers and poachers firmly turn me away as soon as I try to film. Everything belongs to someone: only the owner can allow its use. A fortified city. Men in a vault. Getting rich. Marvelous designer skyscrapers draw the line between the select few and the indistinct masses. Empty, docile bodies.

Last seen walking

A study on surveillance videos showing the last sighting of missing people. The film is structured as a long walk through the city in which the exit from the scene corresponds to the total disappearance of the person. Sometimes the subject is more evident, other times it mingles in the crowd or appears in a few pixels in the distance. The edges of the picture are also the limits of the image, which can be easily crossed but which, in the case of these videos, become openings to the unknown.

Every Soul of my Body

After the passing of her mother, Lorena finds the diary that she kept all her life. The entries allow her to discover a different woman. Having grown up in the worship of her father who fought as a partisan during the war, Lorena realises that she must start digging in the secret story of her mother if she wants to understand aspects of her own life. The pages of the diary feel like a book from another time. Working as a nurse, her mother was covertly working for the partisans passing them intelligence that she astutely acquired from wounded German soldiers by administering more morphine than usually required to ease the pain.

Prima dell'anarchia (per l'anarchia culturale)

Filmreflex on the protest of the young anarchists at the Carrara congress and of the international political-literary avant-garde at the 1968 Buchmesse in Frankfurt: in these reflections on anarchy a thread of protesting discourse led by Cohn-Bendit emerges from the discussions and declarations pronounced at the anti-congress and at the Gegenbuchmesse, where meetings were promoted for the foundation of the students and workers league and international counter-publishing, contesting the bureaucratic organization of the congress and the peace prize awarded by the Buchmesse to the imperialist president Senghor: a speech for the anarchy of culture.
