The Task

A film directed by Ledare during a three-day conference that he organized in Chicago that was structured according to the Tavistock method—a project that involved recruiting 30 participants, securing the collaboration of 10 psychologists trained in the method, and directing a film crew. Complex patterns of stereotyping and other projections of identity emerge through the participants’ discussions; authority is questioned, assumed, and taken away; and viewers are implicated as the participants become aware of subjective forces that exist beyond the imposed boundaries of the conference system.

Europa - Ein Kontinent als Beute

For decades, Europeans between Finland and Cyprus were united by a promise of peace and greater prosperity. But since the financial crisis of 2008, the European project has been in its worst state since World War II. The continent is divided by neoliberal economic concepts, corruption, and banks that operate globally. Labor rights and social standards are being increasingly eroded, fueling ethnic hatred, class struggle, and nationalism, and driving people into the arms of right-wing populists. In Christoph Schuch's documentary "Europe – A Continent as Prey," important questions are raised about the problem, foremost among them, of course: How did it come to this? And how can we get out of this dangerous situation?

Nobody Loves Me

High in Lake Titicaca in the Andes Mountains, a large and homely frog once thrived, a species endemic to altitude and cold water named Telmatobius culeus. But over-collecting for human consumption, pollution and predation by introduced species have devastated the Titicaca water frog — which has a hard enough life as is, given its resemblance to a certain human sexual organ and the many unflattering nicknames that has spawned. In 2016, 10,000 frogs died all at once, and it wasn’t the first mass die-off this critically endangered species has experienced. This short film from The Redford Center shines a new light on these underappreciated animals, showing their amazing adaptability, crucial role in the aquatic ecosystem and what’s at stake — unless humans intervene.

Sorry Cassandra I Misunderstood: EVERYTHING PREDICTS 9-11

This film was a collaborative effort on the part of many researchers working in the field of synchronicity and 'high weirdness', uncovering anomolies that could be called impossible in their implications, yet demonstrably true regardless. This film centers mainly around Back to the Future, the band ABBA, Stanley Kubrick, the 1980 film The Visitors/Artificial Intelligence, The Walk, 9-11, and the 2 biggest hotel fires that have occurred in U.S. history: The Winecoff fire of 1946 in Atlanta Georgia and the MGM Grand fire of 1980 in Paradise Nevada. This project was inspired by extensive studies in the Zohar and years of translating ancient Kabbalistic texts from Hebrew and Aramaic with a Rabbi. When these studies were applied to the goings on in the world at large, the following is what had emerged out of this.

Arara: A Movie About a Surviving Movie

In 2012, Rodrigo Piquet, from the Museu do Índio, showed Marcelo Zelic, from the group Tortura Nunca Mais, a film he had found called ‘Arara‘. The title did not refer to the animal, nor to the people known by that name. Zelic underline it as an important probative record on the teaching of torture during the military dictatorship. They were images of the graduation of the Guarda Rural Indígena, in Belo Horizonte, produced by the anthropologist Jesco Von Puttkamer (1919-1994) in 1970.

The Sensitives

In Drew Xanthopoulos’ intimate and cinematic documentary, we meet Joe, a patriarch whose affliction is so all-encompassing that he’s indifferent to his long-suffering wife; and twin brothers Sam and Nathan, musicians who are no longer able to breathe outside of their real-life sterile “plastic bubble,” and whose mother, Karen, developed her illness when she was only 17. These characters all suffer from debilitating sensitivities to their environment. Whether from ambient chemicals, genetics, electricity, or even psychogenic reasons, the cause is not clear, but the reality of the effects on these individuals is undeniable. Fortunately, Susie Molloy, a quiet firebrand who is chemically sensitive herself, seeks to help. In her, those afflicted by this modern malady have found an advocate whose mission is to de-stigmatize this community, and in telling their stories, Xanthopoulos has crafted a film itself as deeply sensitive as its title suggests. Les mains libres

Frans Masereel is one of the most fascinating Belgian artists of the 20th century. His work, essentially composed of black and white engravings, is a cry of rebellion against the tragedies of his time. Forced into exile for his pacifist convictions, he embodied, alongside writers like Stefan Zweig and Romain Rolland, the dream of a cultural and brotherly Europe. Through an imaginary correspondence the director addresses to the artist, the film sketches the portrait of a free, touching man who, throughout his life, attempted to break free of art dealers and put his creations in the hands of all.

James Beard: America's First Foodie

Food in the 21st century has become much more than “meat and potatoes” and canned soup casseroles.” Chefs have gained celebrity status; recipes and exotic ingredients, once impossible to find, are now just a mouse click away; and the country's major cities are better known for their gastronomy than their art galleries. This food movement can be traced back to one man: James Beard. His name graces the highest culinary honor in the American food world today—the James Beard Foundation Awards. And while chefs all around the country aspire to win a James Beard Award, often referred to as the “culinary Oscars,” many of those same chefs know very little about the man behind the medal. Respected restaurateur Drew Nieporent summed it up when he said, “Everybody knows the name James Beard. They may not know who he is, but they know the name.”

Revolution in the Ring

When Teófilo Stevenson became a national hero in Cuba, American fight promoters offered him millions to challenge world heavyweight champion, Muhammad Ali. To fight Ali, Stevenson would have needed to leave Cuba, but Stevenson refused the offer, asking: "What is one million dollars compared to the love of eight million Cubans?" Many boxing fans call the Ali-Stevenson fight the 'greatest fight that never was.' This is the story of how Teofilo Stevenson's life and the life of his Cuban people were dramatically altered by the embargo.

Oscar Arias: Without a Shot Fired

This is the story of a tiny country that made a decision to do something that no other country had ever done -- it decided to abolish its army and declare peace to the world. And this is the story of a young boy who grew up in that country, and how he ended up challenging -- and sometimes even convincing -- the greatest powers in the world to follow Costa Rica's example. "Oscar Arias: Without a Shot Fired" is a Don Quixote-like saga with great historical touchstones -- Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, Cold War politics and Communism, Central American War and Peace. It follows a slight, academic, and most unlikely hero over the course of more than fifty years, as he travels the world in a quest to stop the spread of the weapons of war. In the end, it is a story about the triumph of reason, of the sparrow triumphing over the eagle, and how the impossible dream can sometimes come true.
