Wenn Europa brennt: Die Macht des Feuers

Every year on Earth, hundreds of millions of hectares of vegetation are swept away by flames. During the summer of 2018, Europe experienced a foretaste of the foreseeable consequences of climate change, with record temperatures and extreme drought leading to forest fires on an unprecedented scale, particularly in Sweden. How can we better prevent and control these fires, over 90% of which are man-made? Climatologists and specialists are joining forces to provide the best possible response to this threat. From increased prevention among young people, to innovative detection systems and the planting of cypress trees to block the flames, methods are being studied to combat this scourge from France to Spain and Germany.

Portugal Tem Lata

Portuguese people are connected to the sea. With much of its border bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, it will not be surprising that comes from here a huge slice of our income. The fish canning industry, one of the most emblematic and old Portuguese industries, was again very fashionable, partly because of the musician and singer, founder of the mythical Heróis do Mar and the LX-90, Rui Pregal da Cunha, that opened a restaurant in honour of the national canning industry and fado - Can the Can. Now, Pregal da Cunha, who has always liked to position himself behind the camera, tells us this story. Part of the History of Portugal.

The Lost Crown

Written in the 10th century, the Aleppo Codex is the most ancient copy of the Jewish Bible. It had been kept in the Syrian town of Aleppo for centuries and was smuggled in the 1950s to Israel, where it was revealed that 200 pages had gone missing. A cheese merchant, a murdered antiques dealer, Mossad agents and Israel’s second president are all implicated in the decades-long mystery. This gripping documentary is an attempt to find the lost pages as well as the soul of the once unified Aleppian Jewish community.

But What Was She Wearing?

In 1992, Bhanwari Devi, an Indian social worker hailing from the Kumhar caste in rural Rajasthan, was gang-raped by upper caste men for having the temerity to intervene and stop the child-marriage of an infant. The subsequent acquittal of the accused in connivance with the state machinery outraged India and galvanized women’s activism that led to the Vishaka Guidelines, and subsequently the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act in 2013. This documentary juxtaposes the law on paper with the ground realities, through a first-of-its-kind log of stories and experiences of over two dozen Indian women; tales of sexual violence that they face - from opulent corporate offices, to construction sites and manual scavenging - and their fight for justice against an obstinate patriarchal state. ‘But What Was She Wearing?’ attempts to portray the impotence of this paper-law and the impossible odds Indian women are up against in pursuit of justice.

The King of Börek

Mouth-watering and entertaining, The King of Börek follows the rise and fall of the Alkolombris family – Bulgarian bakers that immigrated to the newborn state of Israel with their famous bourekas pastry. The family enjoyed rapid success, and their bakery in Jaffa soon became a well-known establishment, drawing crowds from all over the country. This led to the first franchised food chain in Israel – Sammy Bourekas & Sons. Run by patriarch Sammy’s two sons and son-in-law, bakeries selling bourekas popped up all over Israel. Money started to flow, accompanied by an extravagant lifestyle and parties with Israeli high-society: politicians, soccer players, actors and models. But as the rival siblings began to clash, jealousy, honour and greed threatened to tear down the family empire.

Public Money

Across New York City, a bold experiment in participatory democracy is underway. Since 2012, the city council has steadily increased investment in a process called “participatory budgeting”, wherein community members gain a role in deciding how to spend part of a public budget. Following the process over one year in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park—a multicultural neighborhood undergoing gentrification—this quietly observed, verité documentary asks what happens when community members come together to discuss and decide what development should look like in their neighborhood.
