Nurses Come and Go, But None for Me

The film by Ed Atkins and Steven Zultanski combines a performative reading of Philip Atkins’ (Ed’s father) diary, written during the six months leading up to his death, with the reenactment of The Ambulance Game, a role-playing game played by Atkins and his daughter. Originally private, both the diary and the game are now performed publicly, with the camera alternating between the performers and the audience, emphasising voyeurism and shared intimacy. Exhibited at Tate Britain alongside Atkins’ writings, paintings, embroideries, video works, and drawings, Nurses come and go, but none for me (2025) marks both Hartwig Art Foundation’s first commission of a work by Ed Atkins and the artist's debut feature-length film.

The Pool

Bondi Icebergs is the most photographed pool in the world. This is where generations of children have learnt to swim, where the diehard have braved the frigid waters of one hundred winters, where the young and beautiful have come to bond and bake in the hot sun. THE POOL is a stunning cinematic experience with a soundtrack that harks back to the 1960s and a cast of characters who each have a story to tell. It speaks to the enduring power of community and our collective longing to find it. No matter your background or where you’re at – everyone is equal in their swimsuits.

Troll Storm

What are the limits of free speech? Troll Storm is the story of a Jewish woman in Montana, Tanya Gersh, who was the victim of an unrelenting social media campaign of antisemitism and her decision to fight back in court. “The second I decided to fight, I started to heal,” she says in this powerful film. And although the crux of this story takes place several years ago, the new swarm of antisemitism currently crossing our country makes this story feel extremely relevant. Gersh uses interviews with a holocaust survivor as a brutal reminder of where we could end up again if this culture of hate is not faced by our country. In Accept the Call (WFF 2019) director Eunice Lau’s latest film, the parallel between Europe before the rise of the Nazi party and what happened to Gersh is frightening. – Sabina Barach

I Went to an Alien Planet

This film documents Mr Zhang Xiangqian, one of the three major cases of alien contact in China. He claims to have been taken by aliens to live on an alien planet for a month in 1985 and gained extraterrestrial knowledge. Upon his return to Earth, he taught himself maths and physics and claimed to have written the Unified Field Theory. Despite the fact that much of his correspondence was returned, he continued to insist. We visited and filmed him with scepticism and found that he did have a deep knowledge of physics and mathematics. The film leaves it up to the viewer to determine the authenticity of his experience.

Pink Triangles, Homosexuals Facing Nazism

A documentary that traces the lives of men and women persecuted by the Third Reich because of their sexual orientation. Beginning with the social and political context of the 1920s, when European society still "tolerated" homosexuality, it details the mechanisms of repression and brings to life the hell experienced by the victims in the concentration camps. It also recalls the long road traveled by the victims to obtain the decriminalization of homosexuality and recognition of the harm suffered during this dark period in history. While the film traces the martyrdom of homosexuals and lesbians, it does not fail to place this story in a wider perspective and to bring together in a single memory all the victims of Nazi cruelty.
