Cyborg

Scientists break into the international information field every now and then, announcing the imminent transformation of the reality we know, the formation of the "world of the future": rats with electrodes implanted in the brain, lunar probes, artificial intelligence that has learned to predict accidents, and other joys. However, everything that sounds inspiring to some is frightening to others. After all, the notorious cyberpunk, which we are used to seeing in video games, is, of course, fine, but only as long as we are separated from it by a gamepad.

Documentary films have the amazing ability to present reality, even when the authors wanted to create propaganda. This was the case with “Triumph of the Will of Leni Riefenstahl”, and with less talented documentarians who filmed the Stalinist trials and the “happy life” of the Gulag. We don’t think that this film has exaggerated claims... But this film is certainly a valuable video evidence of the tragedy that came with the war in Ukraine. Below we publish the author's summary of the film:

Generation of Bison

The film "Generation of Bison" is a documentary drama, somewhat similar in plot to the film "Nine Days of One Year" by M. Romm, probably the most famous feature film about Soviet atomic scientists. There are also 9 stories in it, each corresponding to the stage of preparation and construction of the First nuclear power plant, the announcer is just as restrained and laconic, the plot is just as dramatic. At the same time, each story from the film "Generation of Bison" is a short story about the peculiarities of the life of young scientists, their attitude to each other, their interests and feelings. This is told by the participants of the events themselves – living witnesses of the era.

From the Life of One Village

A film about a village with the poetic name Svetlana, which is located two hours from St. Petersburg. It was built by volunteers more than twenty-five years ago for people with disabilities of physical and mental development, doomed to special psycho-neurological boarding schools of a closed type. Many of them, before they got to the village, could not connect even two words, they sat at home, within four walls. Svetlana avoids the words "disabled" or "sick", preferring to call such people "guys". They do not do miraculous healings and special trainings here, the diagnosis is not important here. Here the children simply create the conditions for a normal human life. Healthy and sick communicate on an equal footing, work together, put on performances and run a joint household. Disabled people do not feel sick and flawed. Everyone is equal here. The shooting of the film lasted about 13 years.

Studio is in the Firing Square

It had another name, Leningrad United Film Studio, which it received on March 30, 1942. It was then, in the square of the shelling on Melnichnaya Street, the cinematographers of the Leningrad United Film Studio were able to realize the great idea – to capture the whole truth about the blockade. In the spring of 1942, the footage of the defending city formed into the film "Leningrad in the Struggle", which showed the world an unprecedented tragedy in the history of mankind and the unparalleled steadfastness and heroism of the city-front.

The Winter in the Summer Zolotitsa

Letnyaya Zolotitsa is a village situated along the shores of the White Sea, approximately 180 kilometers from Arkhangelsk. During winter, access to the village is limited to snowmobiles or, alternatively, by air using an old An-2 aircraft. Ilya Ikonnikov, the head of the Letnyaya Zolotitsa landing site, assumes multiple roles, serving as an air traffic controller, airfield watchman, cashier, loader, and stoker—all in one. He travels to the village from his hometown of Onega as part of his duty. Ikonnikov, a former journalist and poet, finds less recognition and congratulations in his aviation work than the personalized epitaphs he crafts. However, he considers the "An-2 service" a calling passed down from his grandfather and father.

Nuclear Lessons

The Semipalatinsk testing site is a terrifying place that has served as a place for the most horrific weapons of mass destruction ever devised by humanity - nuclear bombs - for a consecutive 40-year period. The Soviet Union's leading scientists and researchers conducted extensive studies on the impact of nuclear weapons on urban areas. They constructed simulated towns, complete with real buildings and even metro stations, to observe and assess the aftermath. These dedicated researchers identified the zones where immediate death would occur, areas where survival was possible but would result in blindness, and regions where individuals would live, but their offspring would suffer from mutations for years to come. They conducted experiments and meticulously analyzed the outcomes, and yet, judging by its current state, it appears as though the entire project was abandoned without a care.
