Un Figuier Au Pied Du Terril

Filmed in Libercourt in the Pas-de-Calais, "Un figuier au pied du terril" orchestrates various testimonies, in particular those of Nanass and Hélène, two grandmothers of Algerian and Polish origin respectively, highlighting in turn the colonial management of the working-class population, male domination and the residential segregation to which Nanass's descendants are still subjected.
The dialectic of the film does not exclude moments of poetry, in Nanass's garden, where the fig tree, which is the same age as Nanass's stay in France, is still cherished even though the cold prevents it from bearing fruit. The humble tree from the South transplanted to the land of the North is seen as an allegory for the family of this amazing grandmother, forever uprooted but still standing, who continues to hope for the good days when her "family tree" can finally bear full fruit...

One Education, Two Systems

In late 2015, a group of high school students arranged a four-day exchange program between an international school and a local school in Hong Kong. The exchange was filmed by a team of students from both schools and developed into a 40-minute documentary titled, “One Education, Two Systems”. The aim of the project was to develop mutual understanding and appreciation between students at international schools and traditional local schools in Hong Kong and help bridge the divide in the education system. At the same time, the documentary also seeks to spark discussion on education-related topics, various disparities and other differences between the two systems (teaching styles, mental health, learning attitude, general atmosphere and competitiveness).

Home

One in five families in Croatia lose their apartment or house due to being unable to pay back credit or keep up with overhead expenses. The rigorous Seizure Law provides banks and other institutions with an easier way of gaining real estate. When the system fails, when a citizen has nowhere to apply for assistance and when the unscrupulous administration dislodges them from their flats or houses, then young activists arrive to help and with their bodies prevent the execution of the eviction. HOME has recorded grievous scenes from the very places where the cordons of special police use force to drag away children, women, the young and the old - whose one and only wish is to stay and live in their only home.

Ours is a Country of Words

"Ours is a Country of Words" takes place in Shatila, a refugee camp built in Lebanon when thousands of Palestinians fled their country in 1948. The story begins at an unknown moment in the future, when the dream of the Palestinian refugees to go back to Palestine becomes reality. The film balances on the thin line between fiction and documentary, between dream and reality. Families are preparing for their fictional return, while it slowly becomes clear that this dream is far removed from their daily life in the camp. Through the words they use as actors to talk about the dream of returning to their homeland, we can understand more deeply what it means to them to live in exile.

Everybody Wants To Live Eternally

The psychological and physical burdens that cardiac surgeons must bear are borderline. There are two opinions. The first: if you are not fully dedicated to heart surgery without any other interest you can not be a true professional. The second opinion: if you do not have an outlet, something else in your life, you will quickly fall apart and you will not be able to work quite well. At the center of the film is Mikhail Alchibaia, MD, director of the Coronary Surgery Department of the Bakulev Cardiovascular Surgery Research Institute and one of the world's leading collectors of contemporary art.

Is It Safe To Be Gay In The UK?

Fifty years on from the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in the UK, this BBC Two documentary explores how safe it is to be gay in Britain today. The Pier [Like Mending Glass]

The filmmaker’s grandfather, suffering from Alzheimer’s, remembers, obsessively, an episode from his youth: an elegant young woman climbs over the railing of the pier and jumps into the water; he saves her. The old man’s speech becomes more confused; the women of his family repeat the story, now become mythical, using re-speaking techniques inspired by “verbatim theater”; the filmmaker reconstructs the scene, casting a young woman whose blonde chignon brings to mind Vertigo’s Madeleine. Yet the moment comes when the grandfather has to be brought to a nursing home, where, gradually, he fades away. His mind, his breathing, fly away with the passing time, along the flowing water. The last image that stays with him, is that of the pier…

Russia Imprisoned

These are love stories of people lawlessly separated by prison. Most of the characters in the film, which was shot for 4 years, suffered from imperfect laws or due to failures of the judicial system. The movie is about how difficult it is to wait and fight when there is nothing to hope for. About salvation by love. "After all, not only those who are in prison are sitting-their loved ones are sitting with them!" - says one of the heroines of the film, journalist Olga Romanova.

Due to ever more comprehensive digital surveillance, the darknet is essential for survival for people in an increasing number of autocratically ruled countries around the world.
