Thee Hypnotics - Soul Trading

Thee Hypnotics were one of those late 80's / early 90's bands that dug deep into the roots of rock, filling the gap between alternative rock and metal with their retro-garage sound. Originally from High Wycombe, they set about tearing up the local scene before before spreading their disease across the UK, Europe, and beyond. Three parts loose 'n loud garage rock, one part grungedelic progpunk, Thee Hypnotics produced the kind of uplifting vibe that most of the big-league rock 'n rollers had lost years ago, and most of the newer bar-room gutter rock and tripped-out psyche revivalists could only dream of.

Masha

Luda has not spoken with her daughter Masha for 30 years. They live in different countries, speak different languages. Accidently recorded first conversation between them has inspired the director to produce this film. Is there any family connection left between them? Is it possible to recover it with a call or a meeting? This film is the personal story of the directors family. It has never been discussed before. Directors grandmother and aunt are the main characters of the film who are talking about their past for the first time in public.

Mum's Cards

My mother is a Sociologist – she came to Glasgow from the south of England in the 60’s to work within the Politics Department of Glasgow University- after a few years the Sociologists broke away and formed their own department, where she taught until she retired. Although the university advocated and furnished her with her own personal computer – she still used index cards to make notes on the books and articles that she read. Now that she no longer has an office her house is filled with shoeboxes and filing cabinets containing these cards. My mother was absent on the day that I shot this film; the interview and sounds were recorded at a later date.

15 days

After the refugee camp near Calais that became known as the Jungle was razed in 2016, the hundreds of people who had found shelter and a sense of community there were equally abruptly uprooted, adding yet another sorry episode to the disruption and displacement they had already suffered in their flight from persecution, corruption and the fall-out of war. Imran Perretta’s video 15 days is inspired by the time that he spent in Northern France with former inhabitants of the Jungle, now living rough in the surrounding woods and fields.

Of Fish and Foe

The Pullars are the last family using traditional methods to fish for wild Atlantic salmon off the coast of Scotland. When these include killing seals, the salmon’s natural predators, conflict erupts. Animal activist groups Sea Shepherd and Hunt Saboteurs oppose the Pullars at every turn, despite the legality of the fishermen’s actions and the consequences to their livelihood. Challenging preconceptions, this ambiguous doc puts modern environmentalism under the microscope.

Separation, Vivid Dreams

Artist Bojana Radulović visits her childhood home in Montenegro for the first time in 17 years. The traditional, low-set building is dilapidated, and the garden neglected. Inside, the view is obscured by the plastic sheets wrapped like semi-transparent veils around the furniture. From the house, Radulović looks in all four directions of her mental compass. To the east lies Bosnia, still licking its wounds from the Balkan war. The west represents NATO. To the north lies a new consumerist society and to the south, all the memories of former Yugoslavia. In a poetic cadence, Radulović uses images and words to explore what it means to be rootless despite having a home. She's caught between a past marked by war and a future that holds little promise of prosperity. The house that was once her safe haven is now at the mercy of international developments and political changes.

Tribuna – Happy Rebellion

The film was prompted by the fact that in the capital of Slovenia, one of the republics of the former socialist state of Yugoslavia, a magazine was published that saw nine bans or confiscations – more than any other newspaper in the communist Europe. A thorn in the side of the authorities for thirty years, this student magazine brought together young intellectuals who detected possible democratic shifts in the public sphere. Never strictly political, their rebellion invariably had to do with culture and its latest practices in the more liberal countries.

Cascadia: The Big One

When the word volcano is even mentioned in the context of the North American continent, most people’s minds automatically go to the “super volcano” that's located in Yellowstone National Park. But is this Yellowstone eruption theory in fact a distraction to the real danger at hand on the Western Coast of the USA? The Cascade Region of the Northwestern Coast of the USA boasts 11 of the 18 most dangerous volcanoes, yet the fervor over a Yellowstone explosion overshadows that very real threat of Cascadia.

A Certain Kind of Love

The difficulties faced by same-sex couples have created far too many stories of unrequited love. Glenda Elliott's story is one of them: Glenda came to StoryCorps to remember Lauree, the woman she fell in love with in small-town Georgia, at a time when it was difficult to imagine an acceptable path apart from marrying a man and starting a family. Though she and Lauree planned for a late-in-life reunion, fate interfered. In "A Certain Kind of Love," Glenda remembers the power of their bond.

Theatre Affair

In the spring of 2017, the Investigation Committee conducted the first searches in the criminal case, which everyone now knows as the “Serebrennikov case”, “the Seventh Studio case” or “The Platform case”. Six people, among whom is a world-famous director, are accused of having stolen more than one hundred million rubles allocated for staging performances from the state. And for this they can go to jail for 10 years. Journalists Katerina Gordeeva and Roman Super tried to figure out the essence of this matter. We talked to people who know what theater is, including in terms of money. Studied financial documents. Communicated with those with whom no one had ever succeeded. They understood why the applause of the audience and the compliments of the Ministry of Culture turned into arrests. And of course, went to all court sessions.
