Now and Then

A college student, along with her peers in Japan, rally to change the country’s hostile immigration laws that have incarcerated asylum-seekers in deadly detention centers. Meanwhile, over a century since the 1923 massacre of Korean people during a massive earthquake in Imperial Japan, young activists today take on the torch to seek justice under a government that continues to deny this history. A filmmaker documenting these young activists on the ground begins to excavate the underlying history of discrimination that connects the massacre of a hundred years ago and the draconian refugee system in Japan. Through the process of listening to voices from the past and present, the landscapes in Tokyo begin to echo the unfinished business of the nation’s reckoning with its colonial history.

"Alternative Routes" – Viseu Garage's Rock Echoes from the 80s and 90s

Across the country, many garages were emptied of cars to be filled with drums, basses, guitars, and amplifiers in the 1980s and 1990s. Before studios, often with no one really knowing how to play very well and without a plan, many bands started and ended in garages. What mattered was playing. Each decade has its own sound. In the 1980s and 1990s, it was that of alternative rock and its many variations. This is the story of the garage bands of Viseu, many of them local in scope, several reaching national dimension.

Greenfield

An intimate look into the mind and mission of Robin Greenfield — one of the world’s most radical environmentalists. Known for his bold eco-experiments, including wearing a month’s worth of trash through Times Square, living a full year on only homegrown and foraged food, and giving up every possession, Robin challenges what it means to live in harmony with the Earth. As he walks barefoot from Canada to Mexico releasing every material item, his radical simplicity invites us to question what we truly need to be free, fulfilled, and human.
