A film about the end of the world and the end of a roll of toilet paper. In his deftly playful work shot on 16mm, filmmaker (and musician) Ondřej Vavrečka reminisces, says his farewells and also reflects on the limits of progress. Via three fictional characters, each of whom responds differently to the impulses of their surroundings, he simultaneously enhances the sensitivity of the film audience. Will a pain we experience leave a scar or merely a colourless memory? And will someone remember the old Vysočany station a hundred years from now? In its poetic charm this cinematic piece is almost tactile in nature; it awakens all the senses and, in places, bears the hallmark of Jan Švankmajer, if the latter had been born an essential optimist, that is. Film as a whisper emanating from smiling lips. (Viktor Palák, KVIFF)

Les Lumières de Vallot

Joseph Vallot, geographer, naturalist and mountaineer born in 1854 in Lodève, was a visionary man, full of humor and whose curiosity was insatiable. He had spent some forty years of his life studying the Mont Blanc massif, sacrificing a good part of his fortune to this multifaceted passion. He was notably the first to demonstrate that one could sleep, work and even do science at an altitude of over 4000 meters, at a time when ascents to the summit of Western Europe were still adventurous expeditions. This documentary tribute follows in his footsteps, via the route taken at the time, on foot from Chamonix via the Grands Mulets refuge to the summit of Mont Blanc to the Joseph Vallot observatory nestled at an altitude of 4400m, with a team of guides, journalists and scientists.

Lost Cells

“A gift so precious, you can only offer it once” was the promise Cryosave, a Swiss multinational and global leader in stem cell banking, made to hundreds of thousands of new parents. For a few thousand francs, the company offered to store their newborn’s umbilical cord blood, an insurance policy against more than 80 illnesses, a safeguard for the future. But behind the brochures lay marketing schemes, hidden commissions, and a lack of oversight. In 2019, Cryosave abruptly went bankrupt. Without notifying its clients, the company quietly transferred over 300,000 stem cell samples to a lab in Poland. Since then, many parents have been fighting to recover what they believed was safely stored.
