Protect Your Home (Interpret It Well)

Protect Your Home (Interpret It Well) opens with another storm system surging behind a rainbow over idyllic grassland, as the ominous vibraphone tingles of Ches Smith’s “Interpret It Well” start up. A medley of images smatter across the screen: YouTube storm chasers, HGTV bulletproof door shills, a cacophony of home protection start-ups, sage, panic rooms, bunker aquaponics. A test house in a warehouse is systematically destroyed by a lab-grown hurricane. The litany quickly grows absurd, and one thinks of others that profit off of fear and anxiety: the wellness industry, arms manufacturers, the prison-industrial complex. When you carry a hammer, everything looks like a nail. [Overview Courtesy of Screen Slate]

The Wind Blows the Border

On the violent border between Brazil and Paraguay, a war is being waged around the expansion of agribusiness. On one side sits lawyer Luana Ruiz, the heiress to contested lands and one of the strongest supporters of president Jair Bolsonaro. Ruiz, like other ruralistas—rural wealthy elites and agribusiness producers who advocate for Indigenous cultural annihilation—has become empowered and her ideas of hate have flourished under Bolsonaro's anti-Indigenous agenda. On the other side sits teacher, Guarani-Kaiowá leader and activist Alenir Ximendes, embodying powerful Indigenous resistance and communal ideals. Having personally suffered losses at the hands of the ruralistas, Ximendes emerges as a powerful force against Ruiz, fighting for the protection of her community, their lands and Indigenous constitutional rights. This film contains sensitive images and dialogue in its portrayal of this urgent struggle for sovereignty.

From the Black Earth

From the Black Earth is a collaboration between Bristol based company Cables and Cameras, and a local farmer Humphrey Lloyd. Employing both lucid speakers and poetic camera work, the film poses stark questions such as; why does food poverty exist in a nation of plenty, and why are people of colour so under represented not only in our countryside and farms, but in the environmental movement more broadly? By giving a platform to people of colour who are connecting with nature and working the land, this short documentary starts to unpick these questions...

Mixtape

Mixtapes have an out-sized role in the emergence of hip hop around the world. Before radio play, the internet, and social media, there were mixtapes. No matter where you lived, you could pop a cassette into a tape deck, and be transported to a party halfway around the world. DJs were taste makers, trendsetters and creators of the sound that became the biggest musical genre on the planet. A meteoric rise for an art form not yet 50 years old. The importance of mixtapes goes well beyond the tapes themselves. Mixtapes were a form of currency. A signifier that you were In-The-Know and had your ear to the streets. A skeleton key to the underground. The culture was too strong to be stopped, and the artists were too talented to be ignored - so they turned the sub-culture into the mainstream, and made hip hop what it is today.

Babička jako Šance

The fascinating story of Zdenka Wasserbauerová, who, at the age of 82, is intensely dedicated to expanding the bone marrow donor registry and, above all, giving patients a chance at recovery... A grandmother and a teenager full of energy rolled into one. That's how people around her describe Zdenka Wasserbauerová. Where does a woman who, at 82, could be enjoying a well-deserved rest, find the strength to spend whole days on the road, on her feet, and above all, never-ending recruitment of potential donors? To answer this question, we must go back to the time when her grandson and the film's director fell ill with leukemia as a child. Pavel recovered, but his friend Honzík was not so lucky. No suitable bone marrow donor could be found for him. Since then, "Grandma Chance" has been literally "going for the bone marrow" and, with never-ending enthusiasm, has been spreading awareness and working intensively to expand the bone marrow donor registry for more than 25 years.

In the Name of Love!

As per a recent report, thousands of girls from Kerala and Mangalore from Hindu and Christian communities have been converted to Islam, most of them ending in Syria, Afghanistan and other ISIS and Taliban influenced areas. There is hardly any visible action being taken being taken on this. No specific data available. Police and administration are muffled. Government is in denial mode. As a result, rampant religious conversion through a deep-rooted indoctrination network has taken over Kerala like fire in hay.

Hermaküla: Lost Father

The 1960s and 70s brought a new wave of talented young poets and writers, painters and theater innovators to the gray and established culture of Soviet Estonia. Evald Hermaküla began his theatrical career as a young, angry genius working at the Vanemuine Theater, where he staged several legendary productions. The direction of Hermaküla was clear - away from the text and the rationality towards the subconscious. The film mixes theatrical and personal memories of the author with documentary archival material and Hermaküla's contemporary thoughts on theater, life and death.

Faccia di capra - Storia di una metamorfosi

During the months of the pandemic, the group of inmates and the theater company began an epistolary correspondence, in the course of which the text that was supposed to be their next performance, based on a fairy tale from Basile's collection Lo cunto de li cunti, became the fantastic echo of a slow and difficult transformation that affected everyone. Thus, the film is about metamorphosis and tried to do so by putting the world of fairy tale in constant dialogue with the world of reality.

The Despair of the Monkeys

The first films of Patagonia - where I grew up - show a territory that no longer exists, as the araucarias, millenary trees from the Patagonian forests, were in part replaced by more productive pines. Near my new home, in Belgium, I find araucarias that adorn front gardens. We hear some girls playing in the car, pointing out araucarias on the road. How did these plants become a petty-bourgeois fashion in northern Europe? I confront these archives with contemporary technoscientific images, used by a lab to explore plant modifications. What can these modes of representation tell us about our time?
