Signed: Lino Brocka

Documentary filmmaker Christian Blackwood profiles controversial Filipino director Lino Brocka, detailing his rags-to-riches rise in the mainstream film industry of the Philippines. Primarily using interviews with the effusive director himself, Blackwood allows Brocka to describe, in his own terms, the common thematic threads tying together his work, from his own homosexuality to the political repression suffered by Filipinos at the hands of Ferdinand Marcos' dictatorial government.

Island of Hope, Island of Tears

The story of Ellis Island and the American immigration experience. This film is a tribute to the 18 million men, women and children who made the torturous journey from the Old to the New World between 1890 and 1920, in the single largest migration in human history. The film radically tells the immigrants' stories as they braved the unknown, from the time they left their homelands, their journey across the ocean, to the moment the doors of Ellis Island opened, revealing the great promise of America.

Submarine: Steel Boats, Iron Men

Everyday, American submariners go below the waves for months at a time on submarine patrols. Steel Boats, Iron Men is the only film where the US Navy allowed filmmakers to go down with them. The film presents a never before seen look inside a state of the art nuclear powered submarine on patrol. It shows, in extraordinary detail, the daily ordinary and extraordinary lives of submariners. You will see things in this film that you have never seen before. The filmmakers also spent time trying to understand the character and personality that allows someone to become a submariner. They looked at training, family life, background, etc. The viewer visits a " wet trainer" at Sub School to see what these submariners must endure before they ever climb inside one of these remarkable ships. Who are these men, who live confined in a steel tube deep in the ocean for months at a time, surrounded by a hostile environment, in constant danger? What do they do and why do they do it?

The Three Worlds of Bali

On the Indonesian island of Bali, the arts permeate almost every aspect of daily life. Gamelan music, wayang (shadow puppet) theater, dance, and elaborately constructed offerings of foods and flowers all represent attempts to please the gods and placate demons. In Balinese cosmology, demons are thought to dwell in the watery underworld, gods in the upper world, and human beings in the middle realm between the two. Much of human effort is directed toward maintaining the proper balance between these worlds, and between the forces of growth and decay.

Une étoile pour l'exemple

Ballet legend and choreographer Yvette Chauvire is the subject of this informative documentary that traces her career from the beginning when she burst upon the scene with her 1937 debut, La Mort Du Cygne. Her 1972 farewell performance at the Paris Opera concluded her dancing career. Famed composer Henri Suageut tells the visiting Yvette "I hear my music in your movements." Curiously, an interview with Rudolf Nureyev gives little insight or interest on the dancers or their performance art.

Performance Arirang

Performance Arirang is the first independent documentary produced outside the institutional system. Using Yeonwoo Stage theater group's production Pannori Arirang Gogae as its subject matter, the film takes a unique approach by separating visual and audio elements - showing rehearsal scenes, preparation footage, dressing room moments, and performance scenes while overlaying them with live performance audio, audience reactions, interviews, and recordings from Yeonwoo Stage's evaluation sessions. The intentional dissonance between visual and audio elements is interpreted as a means to actively engage viewers with the film. The inclusion of edited interviews from various individuals as off-screen sound suggests an intention to reflect on reality and reconsider the meaning of both Pannori Arirang Gogae and the film Performance Arirang within that reality.

Noticiero Mujer, Hoy

Starting in 1972, Law 19327 came into effect in Peru. Its main feature was the mandatory exhibition of Peruvian films, which had to accompany feature films in daily screenings across all cinemas in the country. This provision enabled film students, as well as professionals already working in production and filmmaking, to create their own works—generating both employment and a learning environment. Many of today’s established filmmakers began their careers under the opportunities provided by this law. MUJER, HOY (WOMAN, TODAY), composed of four short films also with three segments each and a total runtime of approximately five minutes, was shot on 35mm color film. It was one of the first newsreels to focus exclusively on cultural content. The diverse appearances and contributions of notable figures in MUJER, HOY collections represent a valuable resource for researchers across various disciplines.
