EA6 - film surprise

Vincent Dieutre returns to wander through an unfamiliar city, following paths that fork through clearings, ponds, and tree-lined avenues. Like a moving diary, fleeting encounters, reflections on the water, and voice-overs seem to weave together desire, memory, and loss. A wide-eyed flânerie in which every moment seems to hold a fragment of cinema already seen or dreamed, evoking the sentimental geometries of beloved filmmakers. Between intimate confession and sensory drift, Dieutre transforms the landscape into an emotional archive: past lovers reemerge like ghosts among the trees, while the present dissolves into a continuous overlapping of times. The film, suspended between documentary and autofiction, extends the director’s autobiographical work, adding a new chapter in which the director’s body, the city, and cinema itself merge. It is a journey with no apparent destination, where the act of walking becomes a creative act and a form of survival.

The Way You See Me

An intimate story about the construction of identity and the consequences of defying gender norms within Mexico's conservative upper-middle-class society. The Way You See Me traces a ten-year journey from hyperfemininity toward a defiant masculinity. What began as an experiment to challenge the idea that testosterone justifies male behaviour gradually evolved into something far more complex, confronting the filmmaker's body, voice, relationships and sense of self. But the personal keeps opening onto the political. Conservative upper-middle-class Mexican society doesn't just shape us into rigid gender roles; it recruits us as enforcers of those roles too, compelling us to monitor and regulate one another. Shot over a decade, this is one of the most comprehensive and candid explorations of what it means to transition, revealing the intertwined power dynamics between class, gender and systemic violence in Mexican society.

The Muscles Are Tense

At a demonstration in Berlin against the genocide in Gaza and the German arms supplies contributing to it, protestors are violently arrested, wrestled to the ground, sprayed with pepper spray and captured on camera. This essay pauses those overwhelming moments and isolates what is happening in order to examine it. Drawing from Fanon and Butler, among others, it offers a pointed interrogation of double standards, the state’s monopoly on violence and protesting under constant surveillance.

Russia is already waging a low-intensity war against the countries around the Baltic Sea. But it isn't being fought with conventional weapons. Cyberattacks, disinformation, propaganda targeting Russian-speaking minorities, and sabotage of air traffic and internet cables are part of the strategy, organised and financed by the Kremlin. The aim of these operations is political, social and economic destabilisation, which many experts consider to be preparation for military aggression.

The film explores his convictions, his family's daily rhythms, and the tensions that arise when belief meets the demands of life.
