Dass ihnen der arme Mann Feind wird

This documentary shows the German Peasants’ War between 1524 and 1525 and looks at the role of Thomas Müntzer in it. Müntzer, who was a follower and admirer of Martin Luther, directed his resistance not only against the clerical authorities ruled by the papacy, but also against the secular worldly order. In Mühlhausen, Müntzer worked as a pastor in the Marienkirche and later became an agitator and promoter of the violent liberation of the peasants. Luther distanced himself from Müntzer at the beginning of the Peasant Wars. In the battle of Frankenhausen the rebels were completely defeated, Müntzer captured, tortured and publicly executed on May 27, 1525.

Leni Riefenstahl - The End of a Myth

Countless people around the world know the pictures from Leni Riefenstahl's films, even if they have not seen them in their entirety. The work of the German director has burned itself into the collective memory. Even decades after the end of the Nazi era, she showed no remorse and presented herself as an apolitical, naive follower of the Nazi criminal regime. Her artistic service for the cinema was always recognized. But book author Nina Gladitz shows after decades of research that Hitler's favorite filmmaker was not only a follower, but also a perpetrator during the Third Reich, who instrumentalized other filmmakers such as the brilliant cinematographer Willy Zielke in order to gain fame for herself.

Wild Planet – Lisbon in Jeopardy

Modern science still researches how exactly tsunamis originate and cause additional havoc in cities they affect. A fascinating case for reconstruction purposes is the ruin of the Portuguese capital Lisbon, on 1 November 1755. The Tsunami killed a fifth of the population. Fear-paralyzed king Joseph's able prime minister, marquess Pombal, took charge of rescue and reconstruction. Minor seismic activity and religious fanatics kept complicating life. This made Pombal the real, absolutist ruler, who finally modernized Portugal.

Die russische Mafia

Crime is something that usually happens in secret, away from the public eye, indeed away from virtually everyone's view. This is all the more true for organized crime, whose representatives go to great lengths to conduct their brutal, lucrative business undetected and in secret. Perhaps it is above all this contradiction between crime and openness from which this documentary draws its shocking effect. For rarely before have high-ranking gangsters spoken so candidly - and here and there so brutally openly that you can hardly believe your ears - in front of the camera about their careers, about extortion and torture, robbery and murder.

Me and Mr. Marshall

This documentary film traces the Marshall Plan's role in revitalizing Germany's coal industry after World War II. The new jobs improved the German economy and European industry as a whole, which also benefited from the new energy sources. The film describes advances in Great Britain and France that resulted from the Marshall Plan, and contrasts the Soviets' refusal to participate in similar programs.
