Three years of filming across Italy, from Mont Blanc to the island of Lampedusa, have resulted in this short film. Caltabellotta is a small town in the far south of Sicily. Born on the ruins of the ancient Greek city of Triokala, its name depends on the three gifts received from Mother Nature: the fertility of its countryside, the sweetness of the water and the ancient fortress on the lace of the mountain, which made the place impregnable, protecting the inhabitants from evil. Over the centuries, the traces of that knowledge somewhere between magic, religion and superstition have been lost in the fog. But you can still recognize the faces of its people, in their relationship with the animal and plant world, in many religious and pagan rituals, an ancient knowledge that marks, even today, the time and the relationship between man and nature.

The documentary portrays this desolate yet comforting space as a deep stream of consciousness that branches off in unexpected directions.

La Balena di Rossellini origins from one of the most beautiful Roberto Rossellini's dreams, an exemplary project for his autorial path. The film conceived, but never realized, by Rossellini took shape in his notes after a trip to Chile conducted in May of 1971, a trip made to conduct an interview-portrait of Salvador Allende, then actually carried out by the director of "Rome, Open City". October 28, 1971: Rossellini, back from Santiago, Chile, reads a newspaper reports of a beached whale on the Pacific coast near a poor village inhabited by fishermen. From this simple news comes a film script for a fable about wealth and poverty. A film whose shooting Rossellini would have been entrusted to the young student Claudio Bondì, just graduated from the Experimental Center of Cinematography.
