Four Springs

Four Springs is a documentary film that presented a family's daily life in the remote town of Dushan in the Guizhou province in southwest China. From a subjective angle, the camera induced the flow of life out of the screen: the quotidian toils, singing, excursions in nature, visits among friends and extended families, funerals, reunions and departures. It presented the state of being of the two main characters, the director's own parents, and their attitude when facing irretrievable loss in life.

Ai Weiwei: Yours Truly

Ai Weiwei, famous for his large-scale installation work and his dogged social justice advocacy, created a career-defining work in 2015 with @Large, mounted at Alcatraz, the emblematic site associated with egregious incarceration conditions and radical Native American protest. At the core of @Large were portraits of prisoners of conscience coupled with the opportunity to write letters of solidarity to the imprisoned. In her impassioned and powerful film, exhibition curator Cheryl Haines visits several current and former prisoners, including American whistleblower Chelsea Manning, and learns how these letters were vital to their survival. “The misconception of totalitarianism is that freedom can be imprisoned. This is not the case. When you constrain freedom, freedom will take flight and land on a windowsill.” — Ai Weiwei

Hongxia

Once the site of China's early tech industry, Jiuxiangiao is now a 'shanty area' slated for urban renewal. Residents recall how the area grew into an advanced electronics district in the 1950s, as part of the Chinese government's first Five-Year Plan for social and economic development. With support from the Soviet Union, factories began producing China's first home grown large scale computers and telephone switchboards. The Hongxia was built as part of a network of amenities including a ballroom and gaming arcade, all intended to enrich the cultural lives of workers. There were onsite nurseries at factories, free swimming pools and the cinema, where entry was free or five cents at most. As interviewees mourn the loss of these services, developers are knocking. 'To tear this place down and build skyscrapers - it makes my heart ache!' laments Wei Guotian, the theatre's former manager.
