Can We Build a Brain?

Artificially intelligent machines are taking over. They’re influencing our everyday lives in profound and often invisible ways. They can read handwriting, interpret emotions, play games, and even act as personal assistants. They are in our phones, our cars, our doctors’ offices, our banks, our web searches…the list goes on and is rapidly growing ever longer. But how does today’s A.I. actually work—and is it truly intelligent? And for that matter, what is intelligence? The world’s brightest computer programmers are trying to build brighter machines by reverse-engineering the brain and by inventing completely new kinds of computers, with exponentially greater speed and processing power. How close are we from a world in which computers take over—from diagnosing cancer to driving our cars to targeting weapons? If we place more and more of our lives under the control of these artificial brains, what are we putting at risk?

Mariupolchanka

“Mariupolchanka” is a women's football team. Its members, namely team captain Yana Vynokurova and coach Karina Kulakovska, were able to reinvent the team after they were disqualified from the Premier Football League, because the former leadership of the team has violated the rules. In 2018, at the time of filming, the goal of the team was to return to the Premier League on their own, without the former leadership. The women were able to find training facilities, attract new team members, and find money for props, salaries and travel expenses.

Ingrid

Ingrid tells the story of a prominent Dallas socialite/fashion designer in the 80s-- who dropped her life and ran off to the woods in order to pursue a personal and creative one. She has since become a total hermit and spends her time creating art out of rocks from the nearby creek. It is a never-ending project. Ingrid peels off the layers of this woman's persona, questioning what would drive a successful Texas fashion designer to leave her profession and family to immerse herself in nature and become an entirely self sufficient woman of the woods.

EMPOWER: Perspectives of Sex Workers

EMPOWER is a series of three portraits of sex workers with heterogeneous trajectories crossing paths of migration, Trans identities, feminism, the fight against HIV, the fight against precariousness and discrimination. Interweaving personal journeys, political analysis, and strategies of collective resistance, Aying, Giovanna Murillo Rincon, and Mylène Juste demand for the rights of minorities. Far from the objectification often at work in documentaries, EMPOWER is a tribute to the voices of sex workers through an active collaboration in production with the protagonists.

Shangku Shelter

Zanskar is a remote kingdom in the northwest Indian Himalaya, where local people are snow-bound for six months of the year. About 10,000 Zanskaris live in the isolated valley. In winter, mountain passes are blocked, the summer Jeep road closes and buses stop. Two decades ago, three friends founded a ski school - to enable winter travel in the valley, improve quality of life, and to encourage young people to stay in Zanskar by helping establish a culture of mountain sports. The film tells the story of this friendship, the ski school and the development of skiing in the area. Along the way a bigger question is raised. Most recently, the federal government announced a major road building project that will provide year round access to Zanskar. How can Zanskar's wilderness be preserved? It is only a matter of time before the winter road is completed, and the "Big India" rushes in.
