The Return of the Wildcat

In this 40-minutes-documentary the ecologist and filmmaker David Cebulla is on a quest to find one of Germany's shyest and most endangered species: the European wildcat. During a scientific pre-study, by chance, he made the first record of a wildcat in an area near his hometown Jena. Thereupon he dedicates a whole year to get the genetic evidence and a really splendid film recording of a free-living wildcat. For this reason he sets up trail cameras and lure sticks. To find out more about these animals he meets up with two interview partners in course of the film. The Thuringian wildcat expert Silvester Tamás answers questions regarding estimates on the stock of free-ranging wildcats and the protection of the species. Matthias Krüger is head-taxidermist at the Jena Phyletic Museum and explains what we can learn from wildcats found already dead.

Zero Mark

At the end of June 2019, a flood occurred in the city of Tulun in the Irkutsk region. Hundreds of homes were flooded, and some were swept away by the current. Residents were not prepared for such a scale of the disaster and managed to pick up only the documents and take out the children. Many remained on the roofs of their homes to protect property from looters. But the water level rose higher than expected, and people were evacuated on their boats, picked up neighbors, and later rescuers joined the evacuation. There are fatalities among the population. The authors of the film chose four families and watched their lives for six months from the moment of the disaster. The filmmakers are trying to figure out what caused the flood. How helpless is a person before the elements? How to find the strength to start life with a clean slate?

Blind Bombing, Filmed by a Bat

During WWII, the Japanese army developed experimental balloons able to cross the Pacific Ocean and reach the West Coast of North America in 3-6 days. Armed with explosives, they were given the code name fu-go, or fusen bakudan (“fire balloons,” or balloon bombs) in an attempt to instill a culture of fear like that caused by the far more deadly American firebombing of Japanese cities. The U.S. responded by enacting a censorship campaign, requesting newspapers avoid reports of fu-go landings or sightings. Living near the remains of a fu-go launch site in Fukushima Prefecture, Takeuchi mimics their flight take-off using a drone camera, and, traveling to North America, follows their arrival across the shoreline and rural landscapes, using a bat’s echolocation as narrative device to place fu-go and Fukushima as echos across history.

Behind Scriptonite's 2004

December 2019 marked Scriptonite’s return to rap. His new album 2004, released exclusively on Apple Music, is filled with inventive beats and typically mysterious lyrics. His break was useful: “I’m feeling very fresh now,” the artist says. “New songs are being written easier and faster than before.” In this beautifully shot movie Scriptonite shows how he created the songs for 2004—and what role a doorbell played in making them. Then he ruminates on hip-hop’s golden age and music as therapy, and finally makes a choice between complexity and simplicity.

Patrick

Luke Fowler’s work has long asked how we come to know someone in their absence. He has explored this question by creating posthumous portraits of individuals through precise compositions of the things they have left behind: recorded images and sounds, papers and notes, artwork, the spaces through which they moved, and the testimonies of friends who remain among the living. Patrick evokes the life of its eponymous music producer [Patrick Cowley] by all these means, taking in the postindustrial charms of San Francisco’s now-gentrified South of Market district, once famous for its dance clubs and leather bars, as if searching for Cowley’s still-lingering energy.
