Il valore della donna è il suo silenzio

The film deals with an imigrant woman from southern Italy, who lives in Frankfurt in the 1970s. Unusual about this film is the way of the storytelling. The original plan was to make a documentary, but none of the female protagonists were willing to be seen in front of the camera. The fear to expose their own family was too big. The law of “omerta” exists in the diaspora as well. A southern italian proverb states: “The girls greatest value is her beauty - the womans greatest value is her silence”. For this reason, in the film only the sound of Maria M. from Basilicata, can be heard. She remains anonemous. In the movie, southern italian emigrants act in Maria's story. In fact, they end up playing themselves, which gives the film several layers and adds a refreshing sense of humor.

La Napoli di mio padre

Giuseppe looked at the horizon as one observes a desire, as something to be reached in order to try to be free. Since childhood, his daughter Alessia, the director, often saw him looking out the window, wondering what was able to attract his attention in such an intense way. Several years later, during a return trip to Naples, her father's hometown, Alessia finds herself observing her father again. Also this time Giuseppe is always in profile and, while the landscape flows framed in the window of a train, his gaze tries to capture every moment, to stop those moments and save them from the fast passage of time.

La sublime fatica

In 1966, Luciano Emmer was commissioned by Twentieth Century Fox to shoot a promotional film for a movie about Michelangelo starring Charlton Heston. When the deal with the Americans fell through, Emmer retrieved the footage and edited it into a documentary about Michelangelo the man, exploring the anxieties and fears revealed in his writings. The sound of the chisel on marble blends with that of a heartbeat. The skewed perspectives on Michelangelo’s sculpture reinforce this idea of the difficulty and effort from which the...

Detto per Detto

Anthropologist Ernesto De Martino in “Il Mondo Magico” traces an analysis of what he referred to as "subaltern popular world", that is, those social realities that were marked by the strong presence of a whole series of practical and pragmatic methods, handed down from generation to generation (from word of mouth to actual rituals), which were performed by people so that it would be easier to deal with everything that presented itself as uncontrollable and unknown, identified as “the loss of being-there”.

Dalla testa ai piedi

Bearing witness to the transition from woman to man that the director experienced between the late 1990s and 2005. Cangelosi began working on the project thinking of it as a kind of visual diary that would follow him step by step through his own physical and psychological transformation. The film, reimagined in editing at the end of the director’s personal story, reconstructs it by interweaving it with part of the historical events and political struggles that have taken place within Italian society over the past two decades.

Stato di Grazia

Can you be accused of being close to ‘ndrangheta families if you have pursued a career in the name of legality? The case of Ambrogio Crespi is much more than a judicial case; it is the answer to these unthinkable questions. It is the paradox that becomes reality. Accused of external complicity in mafia association, he is arrested and tried for having provided votes from mafia circles to a councilor Lombardo… never seen, never known. Although it seemed clear even to the insiders that Ambrogio Crespi was not involved in the charges, the first degree ends with an incredible sentence of 12 years, double the request of the same PM. A sentence that, like a guillotine, weighs on the life of Ambrogio and his entire family.

The story of the factory worker Pietro Perotti, who worked at Fiat Mirafiori from 1969 to 1985 and participated in the workers’ protests by overseeing communications inside the factory, making stickers, wall posters, texts and drawings in the bathrooms, figures out of papier-mâché and foam rubber, and turning the protest marches into “street theatre.” With his movie camera, Perotti immortalized the situations and workers’ protests at Mirafiori until 1974. Thanks to this unpublished material, the movie paints a fresco of factory life in what used to be Europe’s biggest metalworking factory.

Nazirock

From Claudio Lazzaro: "The extreme right seen from the inside: its music, its leaders, its alliances, its rites, and the political acceptance that is opening the Italian Nazi-fascists the doors to institutionalized power. But why are they being accepted and recognized? Because in Italy the radical right wing accounts for 500,000 votes that play a key role within the Italian election system, where 25,000 votes can make the difference and decide who is going to govern the Country. NAZIROCK tells the story of this political transition using the 'skin', 'oi', 'white power' and 'punkadestra' musical bands who sing fascists songs as a main theme."
