Urtain, el ídolo de barro

José Manuel Ibar, Urtain, was a unique case in world boxing. Franco was looking for an idol for this sport and found a champion of stone lifting in Basque Country, who had never considered stepping into a ring. He became a myth and the most popular Spanish athlete of the seventies, but after leaving boxing, that good man lost everything. Alcoholic, ruined and forgotten, he ended up jumping into the void from his tenth floor apartment in Madrid. From heaven to hell the boxing ring.

Yalla Habibi!

FortNine attempts to break the circumnavigation world record with award-winning filmmaker Edwin El Bainou riding pillion. It's a dangerously silly race across thousands of kilometres per day, with the polished and authentic eye that only a ride-along cinematographer can capture. Part documentary and part dark comedy, this is motorcycling as FortNine has never shown before. In less than 19 days, the trio must ride from Anchorage to Miami, Lisbon to Istanbul, Mumbai to Kolkata, Bangkok to Singapore and Perth to Sydney. Their time is inclusive of all flights, border delays and sleep (what few minutes of it there is). Ducati supplied Multistrada V4 Rally motorcycles in each continent for this expedition, and the rest is just gas, swass and the hourglass. Yalla Habibi!

La mitad de mi familia

As the pandemic isolates Uruguayans, Ariel sets out to film his mother, Doris, a prominent psychoanalyst. Through her story, she weaves together the history of her Jewish family, who escaped from Germany, and also that of her Nazi relatives who stayed behind. She tells of the love and heartbreak between her Jewish father and her German mother, the daughter of a Nazi, who declared her dead so she could continue working as an engineer building bunkers. The mingled blood of victims and murderers leads Ariel to wonder why something that happened 80 years ago still affects her life, exploring the ties of power, the relationships between parents and children, and the ways we as people deal with the legacy of our ancestors.

Disease X: Hunting the Next Pandemic

Virologist Dr Chris van Tulleken embarks on a global investigation into the hunt for the pathogen that could trigger the next pandemic and the cutting-edge science developed to tackle it. Known only as ‘Disease X’, it is shrouded in uncertainty. Its origin is unknown, how it could spread is unclear, but its impact could be much more severe than Covid-19. To uncover what Disease X might be, where it could emerge and what traits it needs to spread, Chris follows the paths of past deadly viruses. He visits the ground zero of the Nipah virus in Malaysia, which inspired the film Contagion. He also heads to the front line of the ongoing bird flu outbreak in US dairy cattle in California.

Kindergarten

The caring yet bustling environment of a kindergarten serves as the anchor for this deep dive into early childhood. Structured to follow the gradual progression of ages on screen, the film takes us into the bubble of various children from ages 1 to 5, at a stage where the world seems to revolve around them, and self-awareness slowly shifts from 'I' to 'We’. Through these rarely filmed moments, human nature gradually takes shape. Kindergarten is the fourth film of a series about life's milestones.

A Short Film by Jim Jarmusch, Starring Beatrice Domond

The Skateroom is proud to feature Jim Jarmusch's captivating works in our first skate art collection with the iconic filmmaker. A nod to Jarmusch’s collage-making practice, the photographs have been featured on skate decks in seemingly random sets of threes. Whether their placement seems contrasting or connected is up to the eye of the viewer. The artist himself refers to the process as more dreamlike than logical, with the dark background of each board adding to the mysterious effect.
