Country Threshing

This short documentary records the rural sights and sounds of the Eastern Townships of Quebec. The day of the big stationary threshing machine is almost over, as the machine is pushed into obscurity by the combine harvester. But there are still parts of Canada where crops are gathered in the old-fashioned way as the men work out in the fields and the women manage the kitchen. This film offers a rare and charming glimpse into mid-20th-century rural and family life in Canada.

Boleslaw Bierut Passed Away

A special episode of the Chronicle commemorating the death of Bolesław Bierut. He died in Moscow, March 13, 1956. The President of Poland, the President of the Council of Ministers of the Polish People's Republic, the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Polish United Workers' Party, was a guest of the earth-shattering 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, at which Khrushchev delivered a secret speech on the crimes of Stalinism. Obviously, the film does not mention that because in our country Bierut's death began the thaw period. An honor guard was set next to the coffin in Moscow. The funeral was attended by PUWP delegates, marshals of the USSR, family and workers. The last journey led through Moscow to the airport, where the Bulgarian Prime Minister gave his farewell speech. The funeral march created by Fryderyk Chopin accompanies the images in the production.

Oil - The Invisible Traveler

This Shell Film from 1953, "Oil The Invisible Traveler" looks at how petroleum is brought from producing regions to the market. It starts with the challenges of oil transportation, notably that it is a lot harder to transport a liquid. This is followed by a short history of oil transportation including barrels, carts, and floats, and how these eventually evolved into tanker cars on trains, tanker trucks, ocean tankers, and pipelines. Then the US pipeline system is explained as well as how oil is transported in an example case from Texas to New York. It ends with all the benefits that oil products bring to daily life.
