In the late 1970s, filmmaker Frans Bromet worked on a film about Holocaust survivor and painter Sieg Maandag. The film was intended to answer the question of how one can continue living after a concentration camp. Sieg Maandag was the little boy in the famous photo in the American magazine LIFE, walking towards his freedom shortly after the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. The film 'Life’s Picture' was never completed at the time due to a conflict between Bromet and the producer, who envisioned a heroic film about the Second World War, whereas Bromet wanted to keep it small and personal. Behind the search for answers to the question of why the film failed, a loving monument emerges to a survivor who, despite the misery he endured, managed to create a life in which optimism and inspiration predominated.

Heligoland, April 18, 1947: Preparations for one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history are almost complete. The British want to raze the island to the ground with more than 6,000 tons of explosives - nothing should remind of the sea fortress with its air raid shelters and anti-aircraft systems, with the submarine bunker and naval port. The Heligolanders have been evacuated and are waiting with bated breath for the outcome of the “Big Bang” in Hamburg and Cuxhaven, on Sylt, in Schleswig and Wilhelmshaven. Will they ever be able to set foot on the red rock again - or will the island's history come to an end in an explosion that historians will later measure as the size of atomic bombs?

Turtle Rock

In a remote mountain village, the lives of three generations of a family are defined by hardship and loss. The aging grandmother fears death while her son struggles to find work and becomes increasingly anxious and impoverished. Meanwhile, her grandson returns from the city to start a chicken farming business, only to fail and go into debt. The village, named after a mythical rock representing a fallen turtle, seems to bind its inhabitants to a shared destiny of defeat and struggle.

Donors and voters abandon Carson's campaign as wallets close, hearts open and faith is tested. The Fruitless Tree

There is certainly some pressure to procreate in Western societies, but in some countries, it’s not even a question of choice. Married but childless, director Aicha Macky’s circumstance is judged unacceptable in her native Niger. Doctors haven’t been able to determine why she can’t conceive, but in her conservative Muslim society, women are always getting blamed for infertility, while men are rarely diagnosed. Speaking to her departed mother who died in childbirth, she expresses her deep sadness: “By giving life, you lost yours, whereas I’m dying a slow death by not being able to give life.” Drawing from her personal experience, Macky bravely addresses the taboo of childlessness and the stigma Nigerien women like her must endure. Through delicate, exquisitely shot portraits, and sensitive observation of other women’s secret suffering, she finds a way to affirm herself as a fulfilled individual among mothers.

Koudelka Shooting Holy Land

Czech Photographer Josef Koudelka grew up behind the Iron Curtain and always wanted to know "what was on the other side". Forty years after capturing the iconic images of the Soviet invasion of Prague in 1968, the legendary Magnum photographer arrives in Israel and Palestine. On first seeing the nine-meter-high wall built by Israel in the West Bank, Koudelka is deeply shaken and embarks on a four-year project in the region which will confront him once again with the harsh reality of violence and conflict. Director Gilad Baram, Koudelka's assistant at the time, follows him on his journey through the Holy Land from one enigmatic and visually spectacular location to another.
