Do Not Shoot the Bald Man!

By the beginning of the war in Chechnya, the legendary Major Izmailov worked in the military registration and enlistment office of the city of Zhukovsky. Having buried the first conscript who died during the storming of Grozny, he refused to send 18-year-old children to death and went to Chechnya himself to take out the prisoners. And he freed at least 174 people. The film uses a rare chronicle of the Chechen wars from the private archives of mothers who were looking for their sons in Chechnya, as well as negotiating officers from the working group on the exchange of prisoners. For the first time, the heroes of the film tell in detail what they had to go to to free people from captivity on both sides.

War in Cinema Territory

70 years have passed since the Great Patriotic War, the smoke of cruelty and hatred between the warring parties has cleared. A film about German and Soviet cameramen who worked on the Eastern Front. The war was, as it were, turned upside down in the cameras' lenses and reflected the interests and feelings not of the people filming, but the interests of officials and ideologists of the warring parties. The film is about how important it was to remain human on both sides of the front, even in the unbearable conditions of the war. And German, and Soviet, and, especially, a man with a camera in his hands.

Broken Ties

The film Broken Ties, by independent Russian filmmaker Andrei Loshak, is an unflinching portrayal of families divided by war. It features seven different pairings, whose members speak periodically with Loshak, one-to-one, to explain their points of view. Their conversations extend over the war's first three months, during which time their opinions evidence no change. The film makes no attempt at dialogue -- on the contrary, it is a testimony to the absence of dialogue amidst an unfolding war, and an unsentimental diagnosis of the sickness of a society in which official propaganda proves stronger than even the most intimate family ties.

Only her novel is not written, but shot on camera and supplemented with photos and newsreel footage. In other words, it's a movie monologue about time. About a communal apartment in Maly Kozikhinsky Lane in Moscow. About my parents and my father's arrest. About kindergarten and school. About friends and girlfriends. About teachers. About the beginning of the war and the evacuation to Sverdlovsk. About her husband, critic Boris Medvedev, who met the war on the border, and ended it in Stalingrad. About parallel studies at Moscow State University and at GITIS. About the fight against rootless cosmopolitans.

The evacuation of the Russian Museum during the Great Patriotic War is a little–known and dramatic episode of Russian history. The echelon with paintings by Repin, Levitan, Serov, Shishkin, Rublev icons and other priceless treasures in August 1941 reached Gorky from Leningrad. The film tells about how they lived in the evacuation, how they worked and why after the war the participants of these events did not want to remember those difficult times.
