Johnny Depp: The Love of the Bizarre

Johnny Depp started off as a punk band guitarist, turning to acting to help pay the bills. But his dabbling catapulted him to global fame and there was no going back. Throughout his career, Depp has had fame and infamy in equal measure. His roles are often that of the isolated anti-hero: Edward Scissorhands, Donnie Brasco, Raoul Duke in Las Vegas Parano, and Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean. His poetic outsider characters reveal a critical view of American society.

'Se'-back

Gōzō Yoshimasu is one of Japan’s leading poets, still prolific into his ninth decade. This film documents his 2019 performance of Se (‘back’), a live poetry reading set against accompaniment from avant-garde rock group Kukan Gendai. Blindfolded and wearing a facemask, Yoshimasu plays audio recordings, growls and rasps his way through a rendition of a poem, and channels every ounce of his energy into drawing, using a pane of glass as his canvas. Kukan Gendai sculpt shapes of sound in response: an entire universe thrown into sharp relief by an uncompromising contest between voice and music.

Camilo Torres Restrepo, el amor eficaz

An experimental documentary that dares to gather diverse and plural audiovisual archive materials, which gives itself the possibility of creating an imaginary, but concrete, intense and profound conversation between the filmmaker Marta Rodríguez and the indefinable Camilo Torres Restrepo. A film that invents the opportunity to talk to a dead man, why yes, Camilo died, but his questions, his ideas and his effective love remain strong and powerful within Marta's life and political and artistic reflection. Who was Camilo Torres Restrepo? The documentary tries to answer this question by looking at Colombia today, analyzing it, and understanding it, perhaps a little more, in its inequalities and its constant violence. Perhaps this is the greatest legacy that Camilo left to those who are still alive.

On a grandi ensemble

In Ivry sur Seine, in the Parisian suburbs, the Gagarin housing estate was a symbol. Destroyed in 2020, this film brings it back to life, through the eyes of Adnane Tragha, who grew up across the street, and through the words of its former inhabitants. Back in the deserted city, they evoke their memories of the place. Daniel, Loïc, Karima, Yvette, Foued, Samira and Mehdy tell us about their lives, their experiences and their feelings. The difficulties as well as the solidarity, the stigmatization as well as the mutual aid, the good memories as well as the bad. Crossing temporalities and experiences, "We grew up together" paints, through small subjective touches, the story of a city like so many others. This film is a "counter-history", the rehabilitation of a word that is too rare, a hymn to working-class neighborhoods. "At the same time documentary, fiction, archival work, We grew up together is multifaceted, like the city.
