Midas’s World

Midas's World, a documentary depicting Phrygian art and culture, is the second installment in the "Traces of Anatolian Civilizations" series, produced by Suha Arın as a cultural service of the Turkish Touring and Automobile Association. The product of a year of intensive work, the documentary reveals that ancient Greek art and culture, known as the cradle of civilization, are actually rooted in earlier civilizations in Anatolia, particularly the Phrygians. For Midas's World, produced by Suha Arın and four students from Ankara University's School of Press and Broadcasting, all relevant sources, including museums displaying Phrygian artifacts and Phrygian settlements, were individually scrutinized.

In 1973, Wolf Vostell, an artist associated with Fluxus, made a happening in which participants were required to perform a series of ritual, obsessive actions, such as “go to the trunk of your vehicle, there open and close the trunk 750 times and 375 times put a white plate in it and take it out 375 times.” Described by Ottinger as a documentation of what Vostell called “dé-coll/age-happening”, the film is an illustration of her creative method, a surrealist act, a separate work of art, and a strange object. She would later describe her method as “fragments of reality assembled in an unusual manner”.

It consists of seven parts, each one presenting an ideotype of the human body, from the beginning of civilization up to the present time. The body as a concept or dogma is simply the embodied reflection of every civilization, upon which man himself is established. The anthropomorphism that characterizes the sum total of perception, in a clear or latent state, comes from the fact that the human body, as reality, idea and expression, comprises the ultimate reference.

Theatre Girls

In her final piece at film school, Longinotto and her partner take us into the "Theatre Girls Club" in Soho, London–a hostel for elderly and destitute women and the only shelter in London that would take in any woman at any time. The filmmakers lived in the hostel for more than two months, establishing an extraordinary level of trust with their “cast” —from the home’s feisty cook to an elderly resident who was a terminal alcoholic. In what will later be recognized as a signature style, Longinotto films without judgement and finds the humor and humanity in situations and characters that might otherwise be seen as tragic. This stunning film debut earned awards at several European festivals and screened to acclaim in the US and Asia.

Straw Shoes

This is a documentary that records the actions of the elderly who makes straw shoes. It was filmed in Bongcheon-dong for a day before the urban redevelopment that area. It sharply contrasts the primitive labor of agricultural society and the modern urban labor with bold close-ups and cross editing. Against the backdrop of a poor hillside village in Seoul, it contains young filmmakers’ criticism on labor and society with an anthropological perspective. The film is the last one of the total seven short films made by director Kim Hongjun and Hwang Juho using a self-taught Super 8mm camera for a year from 1976 to 1977 before the founding of Yalasheng, a film society of Seoul National University. The film was selected at the 3rd SIFF.

Chronicle Of A Group

Produced within the framework of the “Programmi Sperimentali” of Italian public television (structure of the RAI which allowed, in the 1970s, the production of films such as Lutte en Italie by the Dziga Vertov Group, Cancer by Glauber Rocha or Perché pagare per essere felici by Marco Ferreri), Cronaca di un gruppo tells the story of a group of young French revolutionaries who, between Paris and the Pyrenees region, are looking for ways to continue their political activities, through the theater experimental and counter-information, the day after May 68. Produced in collaboration with Gianni Toti, Didier Sandre and the Nanterre experimental theater group.

About ‘Song of Ceylon’ by Basil Wright

Song of Ceylon was commissioned for the short-lived German TV-series Telekritik and broadcasted in 1975. In Telekritik documentary approaches were analysed and made available for a critique of contemporary TV, its aesthetics and modes of production. Other authors for the series include Hartmut Bitomsky, Rainer Gansera and Klaus Wildenhahn.In the 30-minute movie, Farocki shows and comments on excerpts from the film Song of Ceylon by Basil Wright (and a short segment of Eisenstein's Mexico-fragments). Farocki's voice-over describes part of the movie, focussing on details and montage. He also uses didactic and descriptive drawings and intertitles to confront the classic documentary and its stylistic approaches with contemporary TV.

Voyage En Face Sud

Voyage en face sud (Journey to the South Face) is a mountaineering documentary by Patrick Cordier and Jacques Ramouillet that shows the first solo ascent of the south face of the Aiguille du Fou in 1976 by Patrick Cordier himself. The climb was filmed by Jacques Ramouillet from a nearby ridge. Pierre Torlasco was tasked with belaying Jacques Ramouillet while he filmed. For this filmed ascent, Patrick Cordier opted for the dress code of his time—white clothing, bell-bottom trousers, and a headband—rather than the traditional mountaineering attire. The film was presented at the Trento Film Festival in 1977 and at the Gala de la Montagne (Mountain Gala) at the Salle Pleyel in Paris.

Small Freedom

The allotment gardens on the outskirts of the city of Zurich provide hundreds of unpropertied men and women with a home which they are unable to find in the impersonal rented blocks in which they live. The gardens represent their hobby, their freedom and their living space, which exists side by side with hard work. They cannot however own these "homes" and the film shows the chronicle of the events which took place in 1976 - 77 when construction of the Zurich wholesale market hall destroyed 150 gardens and made many people "homeless". This portrait of a group is complemented by the stories of three individuals.

The documentary covers notable Japanese martial arts from Okinawa Karate to Ninjutsu, Kendo, Shorinji Kenpo, sword fighting techniques, and even firearms. Various martial arts masters, from Shorinji Kenpo founder Doshin So to Japan Karate Association’s Masafumi Suzuki (who also frequently appeared in Toei’s karate films) and a supposedly 102 year old Okinawa Karate practitioner are brought in front of camera for interviews and martial arts demonstrations.
