Die Allee

A journey from Alexanderplatz to Lichtenberger Brücke through the avenue in East Berlin: Karl-Marx-Allee in Berlin is an internationally significant architectural ensemble. Its significance for the history of Germany is just as great. And this avenue has accompanied me throughout my life. As a child, it was part of my route to school. My aunt Lotte lived on it. I was often in the Karl Marx bookshop. As a young filmmaker, I made my first long documentary about it. Thirty years later, I now cycle through the avenue to work every morning. My movement through the street is also a movement in time.

Homosexualité au cinéma, les chemins de la victoire

Director Sonia Medina and her co-author, journalist Alain Riou, offer an in-depth analysis of how LGBTQ+ people have been portrayed in cinema between the early 20th century and today, since the birth of the 7th art.” As early as 1896, there was already a gay film,” warns Alain Riou in the opening images. With a series of testimonials and explanations from specialists, the documentary traces the difficulties encountered by filmmakers and actors regarding homosexuality. The stereotypes and biased representations that have long prevailed on screen are also examined. L'homosexualité au cinéma, les chemins de la victoire also examines emblematic works that have been synonymous with major turning points in LGBTQ+ visibility, and celebrates the contributions of pioneers who dared to tackle these taboo themes. The film takes a critical look at the effects of cinema on the public perception of homosexuality and highlights the various struggles for equality and recognition over time.

Cohabitants

Piirissaar is a tiny Estonian island in Lake Peipus, on the very border of Russia. The Russian Old Believers who inhabited the island appeared here 300 years ago, during the Great Northern War, fleeing from the religious reforms in the Orthodox Church and to avoid being mobilized in the Russian army. As the waves have washed the island smaller and smaller, the community here has also fused over time, inevitably reaching the brink of extinction. However, the local culture and sense of life that developed in isolation from the rest of the “Russian world” has not yet completely disappeared from Piiriissaar.

Taboo: Amos Guttman

While he was alive, Amos Guttman remained a red flag for the notoriously conservative Israeli film establishment. A Romanian migrant, he, never truly found his place in his new home. He was gay and made the nation's first movies on the subject. He was an artist who wanted to make films not for the masses but for the few. Conversely, he wanted to make movies that connected with the rest of the world and not only Israel – works that maybe Derek Jarman or Pedro Almodóvar could watch by chance and feel understood.
