Backcountry Responsibility

The recent heavy workload faced by Teton County Search and Rescue crews last winter highlights the fact that some recreational users of the Bridger Teton National Forest are in critical need of more and better information regarding best practices and safe conduct on National Forest lands. Many of these incidents could potentially be avoided with proper planning and critical thinking in the backcountry. In partnership with Friends of Bridger-Teton, TGR presents Backcountry Responsibly, a digital film targeted at the growing number of winter backcountry users whose impact on the surrounding public lands has increased dramatically in recent years. Backcountry Responsibly, premieres January 7, 2024. Watch online at: https://www.btfriends.org/tgr

Homosexualité au cinéma, les chemins de la victoire

Director Sonia Medina and her co-author, journalist Alain Riou, offer an in-depth analysis of how LGBTQ+ people have been portrayed in cinema between the early 20th century and today, since the birth of the 7th art.” As early as 1896, there was already a gay film,” warns Alain Riou in the opening images. With a series of testimonials and explanations from specialists, the documentary traces the difficulties encountered by filmmakers and actors regarding homosexuality. The stereotypes and biased representations that have long prevailed on screen are also examined. L'homosexualité au cinéma, les chemins de la victoire also examines emblematic works that have been synonymous with major turning points in LGBTQ+ visibility, and celebrates the contributions of pioneers who dared to tackle these taboo themes. The film takes a critical look at the effects of cinema on the public perception of homosexuality and highlights the various struggles for equality and recognition over time.

Solitary Road

Constructed in 1955 to initially connect Kiruna in Sweden to Altavatn in Norway, the work with the Solitary road was stopped for military reasons. Five small villages had been connected by the road and they were left with a deserted 20 km stretch in the wilderness. Along the road Sami people and finish farmers continue their lives. They still have the road and they have brought really old cars over the ice of Torneträsk so they could drive during summer time. One of the old men that built the road, Sven-Erik Stöckel, writes a letter to the politicians in Kiruna, asking them to finish the road so people do not have to risk their lives getting to the road crossing the dangerous lake of Torneträsk. Will it ever be finished? And what happened to the children that were born as a result of the road workers coming into the wilderness meeting the local girls?

Legal weed 2

Frans Bromet follows several cannabis growers who have been selected by lottery as the first suppliers of legal cannabis. Sequel to the 2021 documentary 'Legal Weed'. Ten growers have been selected by draw as the first legal cannabis growers for an experiment that would last four years. These are large companies where a lot of money is spent to enable large-scale production of cannabis. But the actual experiment still hasn't been fully rolled out. Only in a few cities is legal cannabis available in coffee shops. The biggest problems that growers and sellers face are supply stocks and the complexity of the track and trace system. Every movement of the weed must be registered. And that is almost impossible with a failing computer system. The future of the experiment remains highly unpredictable four years after its announcement.

Taboo: Amos Guttman

While he was alive, Amos Guttman remained a red flag for the notoriously conservative Israeli film establishment. A Romanian migrant, he, never truly found his place in his new home. He was gay and made the nation's first movies on the subject. He was an artist who wanted to make films not for the masses but for the few. Conversely, he wanted to make movies that connected with the rest of the world and not only Israel – works that maybe Derek Jarman or Pedro Almodóvar could watch by chance and feel understood.

Makbetamaximus

“Double, double, toil and trouble,” indeed! Shakespeare’s punchiest tragedy gets a makeover in a way that only the prodigious Filipino multi-hyphenate Khavn De La Cruz could deliver. Unfolding in the Municipality of Marcos, Ilocos Norte and Khavn’s own Burroughsian Interzone of Mondomanila – also the title of the director’s crazed horror-comedy-crime drama, which premiered at IFFR 2012 – this mash-up of styles, genres, moods and atmospheres features a cast of over 100 performers and defies any easy description, even with so familiar a text. But as Khavn says of his source material, "Usually, word is king. Here, text is just one of the many cogs. It’s a column, a roof shingle, an ornament."

Honorable Skate

For more than 20 years, skaters from Asunción have been demanding from the authorities, without being heard, a public space where they can practice the sport. “Honorable Skate” is a cry of struggle. A request that became a demand. It is our way of saying that we are here and we will continue to be here. A wish that we want to come true, not for ourselves, but for the little ones. It is a tribute to the effort of all skaters who, throughout decades of self-management and dedication to a sport that is now Olympic, despite the falls always got back up.
