Lake Vostok. At the Mountains of Madness

More than 100 years ago, explorers raced to discover the South Pole. Now scientists are racing to discover the secret subterranean world of rivers and lakes buried miles beneath it. In 1974, scientists made a sensational discovery: a vast lake underneath the icy desert of Antarctica, untouched for 400.000 years, Lake Vostok. In spring 2012, after 40 years of drilling, Russian scientist broke through the ice. In two different narrative strands the film tells the story of the evolution of life and climate, the story of four decades of exploration in the coldest place on Earth, and it accompanies the scientists on their final trip to the camp. The film also explores the mythologies and legends surrounding Antarctica – from H.P. Lovecraft to James Cameron: the ‘Mountains of Madness’ have lured many into their realm – not many left unscathed.

Sea Gypsies: The Far Side of the World

The vessel is Infinity, a 120-foot hand-built sailboat, crewed by a band of miscreants. The journey, an 8,000 mile Pacific crossing from New Zealand to Patagonia, with a stop in Antarctica. Unlike all the other boats heading to the Southern Ocean, Infinity is no ice-reinforced super-yacht crewed by professional sailors; rather, Infinity lives in the moment and sails on a whim. What can be found in abundance on board is blood, sweat, enthusiasm, risk tolerance, disdain for authority, and an ample supply of alcohol – all in all a mad voyage of reckless adventure just for the sheer joy of it. Along the way the crew will battle a hurricane of ice in the Ross Sea, assist the radical environmental group Sea Shepherd in their fight with illegal whalers, and tear every sail they have. At the heart of their journey is a quest for awe and a sense of wonder with the raw power of the natural world.

Einfach Leben

Is it possible to live a life completely independent of social and economic constraints, wholly at one with nature? In the picturesque mountains of Val Lavizzara in Ticino, several individuals have come together to form a cooperative society and live such a life. There is a plethora of chores to be done on the farm: animals to feed, fields to plough and tree trunks to be chopped. As the year progresses, more and more issues surface dividing the younger and older residents: how much technology is acceptable? How much compromise is necessary and reasonable? Is the amount of work done in balance with the results gained? Along with a poetic gaze, director Hans Haldimann also shows the sometimes extraordinarily complicated side to a ‘simple’ self-sufficient life. This may be far away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but there are just as many problems to be faced.

Bratislava, mesto uprostred prírody

Bratislava is a medium-sized European city. From an economic point of view, however, it belongs to the fastest developing regions of our continent. There is a constant hustle and bustle here. The city is becoming denser and developers are dividing up the last green areas. Buildings, often insensitively located, push out our inconspicuous neighbors from Bratislava. We start to miss them - so we look for replacements. We subconsciously feel that we are part of nature. But at the same time we also need a city. We live here, work here, go to school, shop in countless supermarkets. We enjoy walking through the old streets and along the Danube embankment. We live, or perhaps rather survive, in a city environment. On the fortified banks of the Danube, in the middle of concrete and asphalt. But fortunately, we are not alone here, as evidenced by the attentiveness of filmmaker Branislav Molnár.
