We Shall Build Our New Myth…

We all loved the movie about the Winter Storm. We liked how the Aurora shoots at the palace and paves the way with fire for the stormtroopers, who picturesquely climb the lattice gates. However, in fact, the Winter One did not need to be stormed at all. And anyway, the real events of October 17th looked much more prosaic. Meanwhile, the new government needed its own mythology of the "Great Coup", corresponding to its ideological dogmas and, at the same time, bright, impressive, capable of mobilizing the masses. All available cultural resources and, above all, the resources of cinema, which was not accidentally awarded the title of "the most important of the arts", were thrown into the creation of this mythology...

Daily News — A Chronicle of Our Days

Newsreels were one of the most powerful tools of Soviet propaganda. They also make up a significant part of the state film archives. In the newsreels, the recent past presents itself as a monolith of silent images, firmly stitched together by the narrator's voice and soundtrack subtly playing the viewer's feelings. It is exactly this original sound that the artist suggests to detach from. Just two or three minutes long episodes retain the original montage, which was meant to follow the upbeat narration. Flickering images of the past, which perhaps can only become enchanting to us today by revealing their muteness.

Dogs

After the death of a child in Makhachkala in February, uncontrolled shooting of stray dogs began in Dagestan. This was done by local residents who did not remove the corpses of animals from the streets of Makhachkala and Kaspiysk. It turned out that there is not a single shelter for homeless animals in the republic, but Ali Kurbanov, a resident of Pervomayskoye village, has been keeping dogs at home and on the hillside near the village for many years. Some of them are homeless mongrels, some are wolfhounds involved in dog fights. Sergey Khazov-Kassia and Andrey Kostyanov visited Kurbanov and his dogs.

Be Careful!

The mankind, laughing, to all gets used. Slowly, but correct. It is necessary to recognize, that on a background of prompt growth counterskyscraper and other terrorism, general degradation and degeneration of tastes, the problem of former terrible AIDS is not considered now as something out of the common leaving in a turn universal bad. In comparison with all by rest of the same sort, is in it even and something positive: for pleasure suffer, instead of so that sleep, and wake up under concrete ruins, not having and opportunity to send last "forgive" over the mobile telephone. From asheses send - in ashes we will address, as teach us clever books. In film, about which there will be a speech, the alternative way which was less giving back with didactics, formalin and fatalism is offered.

Bread, 'North' and Cobalt

The military blockade of Leningrad by German, Finnish and Spanish troops with the participation of volunteers from North Africa, France, Italy, Poland and other countries lasted from September 8, 1941 to January 27, 1944 — 872 days. The war is moving further away from us. It is incomprehensible to us, living now, how it was possible to survive in those conditions? And not just survive, but act, work, invent, create? The answer is always the same – Faith, Hope, Love... with them, a person reaches the limits of his abilities. We are alive thanks to them. Those who died – by their martyrdom. Those who survived – by their feat.

Incessant Conversation. Mamleev

Eternal twilight, passing trains, a man's hunched figure walking in the fog, a smiling girl, shadows and silence that are related to each other… Under the infernal sounds-noisy, creaking, howling-there are words that " rub against each other, giving rise to something shaky, almost nonexistent." In the center of the metropolis, people with the" Cain seal " look for the forest and the sea to get lost, and there they stay. And death looks for people to look at, and finds them there… In the film by Valentina Antonova and Dmitry Mamulia, the 82-year-old founder of Russian "metaphysical realism" Yuri Mamleev plays himself shortly before his own death and as if before our eyes is preparing to move to another world.

Hasret

The communist poet Nazim Hikmet, after serving 17 years in Turkish prisons, fled to the Soviet Union as the country of victorious communism. Communism turned out to be a hoax, it lost its homeland forever. The Turkish word "hasret" (longing) is one of the few Turkish words that his adopted daughter learned. His heart could not stand the melancholy and hypocrisy of Soviet life, he died early and was buried in Moscow, where he was safely forgotten. But this old story becomes suddenly very relevant during the referendum in Istanbul.

Russia Imprisoned

These are love stories of people lawlessly separated by prison. Most of the characters in the film, which was shot for 4 years, suffered from imperfect laws or due to failures of the judicial system. The movie is about how difficult it is to wait and fight when there is nothing to hope for. About salvation by love. "After all, not only those who are in prison are sitting-their loved ones are sitting with them!" - says one of the heroines of the film, journalist Olga Romanova.

The Borovsk Effect

The name of Vladimir Ovchinnikov has become widely known in Russia over the last decade - particularly this period of time the street artist has lived in a town that seemed to bewitch him. The town of Borovsk is a strange place, which has been an island of memory for all innocent victims since the XIV century. Boyarynya Morozova died here, Archpriest Avvakum was also imprisoned here and numerous victims of political repression were shot here. Here Ovchinnikov suddenly began to paint on the walls of houses - contrary to the indignation of the authorities: the "naive" graffiti artist is not 19, but 80 years old. Real passions began to flare up in the town in 2015, when Vladimir Ovchinnikov painted on one of the fences his first "memorial to the victims of political repressions"…
