No Hamburg, No Beatles

“We were born in Liverpool but grew up in Hamburg”, John Lennon once said. This feature documentary seeks to find the truth in those words. The long and winding road that the Beatles took to worldwide fame passed through Hamburg, Germany in the early 1960s. Only a couple of years before they became household names, the former Quarrymen were cutting their musical teeth on nightclub stages in the city. Hamburg had become the vice capital of Europe after World War Two, its neon-lit streets home to sailors, sex workers, drug dealers, gangs and low life. Meanwhile, the English band was still developing, still young and virtually unknown. By the time of their last German visit in 1966, the Beatles were an international phenomenon. 'No Hamburg, No Beatles' explains how learning their trade in this fascinating city helped propel them to global stardom.

Kabul Beauty

Sofia and Nigina. They’re Afghans, beautiful, proud, best friends, despite themselves and without knowing it - icons of Kabul’s idle youth. Behind the curtains of their beauty salon, the exterior of which has been ransacked by the Taliban, they support a small team and a dream: to protect their last space of freedom. Their salon is situated in central Kabul. Around twenty employees work there, seven days a week. It’s a sanctuary for women: a place where men do not enter. We began filming the day after the Taliban came to power on August 15, 2021. For a year and a half, as the extremists impose new laws on Afghans, especially women, we follow the two friends in their beauty salon and across the Afghan capital: in a park where they are the only ones who still dare to show their faces; on the hilltops where they learn to drive in secret… And then, on the road to exile. The repression becomes too suffocating, too violent. The young women’s quest for lightness becomes a plan of escape…

1923 Kanto Massacre

The Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 marked a moment of unprecedented material destruction and cultural rupture in modern Japan. The disaster soon became subject to human interpretation and political manipulation as the earth tremors and subsequent fire produced not only physical chaos but also the rumors and violence against Koreans revealing what was fearful and why. After a century, this documentary reconstructs the course of this mayhem against the colonized, and traces the ways in which the story of this genocidal violence has long been covered up, haunting those whose lives were never the same after encountering the forbidden truth.

Favoriten

Favoriten is one of the most culturally diverse neighborhoods in Vienna and the starting point of Ruth Beckermann’s latest documentary, in which she accompanies a class of pupils from the age of seven to ten. Their ambitious teacher, Ilkay, is determined to create an inclusive, supportive and safe environment for the kids. The majority of children don’t speak German at home, some families are wounded by war experience and many face discrimination. Despite few resources from the educational system, Ilkay gently navigates her class through daily adventures, defeats and victories. The result is an astonishingly cheerful portrait of a small community mirroring the complexities of contemporary European society. The film is an ode to childhood, celebrating the work of educators and lifelong learning in and outside the classroom.
